Meditation
« on: November 18, 2003, 06:09:11 PM »
For those interested in meditation (there is accumulating scientific evidence about the emotional benefits of meditation) there is an on-line book that is a fine introduction to the practice, as well as a fascinating look at our culture from a Buddhist perspective (I liked it even though I'm not a Buddhist).  Learning to breathe is a very useful skill for everyone!  The book can be found at http://www.saigon.com/~anson/ebud/mfneng/mind1-4.htm

The only thing I would add to this    is that for some people traditional approaches to meditation are not the answer.  If you have an anxiety disorder it is possible that sitting 'trying' to meditate will make you feel more and more uncomfortable, and raise anxiety levels.  In that case it is best to use meditative techniques on a gentle walk, or while engaged in a simple job like washing up, in order to keep the body calmer.

Found this out the hard way, after many years of trying to 'be still'.  Can't be done.   :?

I assume the only way to obtain a copy is to write the address shown, tho?
Just want to make sure we are on the same page.  I, myself, am up for this method of learning.

Thanks for the tip, October.  I'm glad you found a technique that worked for you.  To the poster wondering about how to get the book--the whole book is readable on-line (and free) at the URL I posted.  If you want a hard copy, you can also order it from Amazon--the title is Mindfulness in Plain English by H. Gunaratana Mahathera.
