Remarkable story.
I don't know whether the mother was an N or just a woman of her generation who had lived with the visceral consequences of a drunk husband for so many years that something rose up within her that said, Life! LIFE will go on, even if he discards his!

I'm going to Portugal! I accept that I cannot control this but I can claim joy anyway!

Our family wedding is going to happen regardless! I will NOT let his alcoholism change everything!

The way I took the story was that the mother was experiencing a very personal loss, rebellion and whatever else...not so much that she was an N.

Could be wrong though.
