Celebrity Big Brother - UK
« on: January 06, 2006, 08:43:59 AM »
Hiya all

I think it's pretty well known that celeb's have quite high narcisstic traits, so I was interested to watch celebrity big brother when it started last night.

The main person I noticed N traits with was Dennis Rothman, the basketball star.  Instead of interacting, he seemed cool and aloof, but automatically everyone could feel his presense in the room.

This is the website for it if anyone is interested:-

I also found reading The Main Attraction on the website really interesting too.  The girl he's showing attention to is the one who isn't a celeb but BB has given her the mission where she has to convince the celebs that she's in a girl band called Kandyfloss.  I think it's really interesting that out of everyone in there he's picked the girl who isn't a celeb... the one who will give him the most attention because the attention won't be on her.... I may be way off, but I'm finding it interesting to watch while thinking about N's.

Hi H&H

Yes, celebs are full fledged N along with most politicians and religious leaders and isn't it ironic how they are so "loved" by the masses.

Dennis Rodman is quite a character.  I'm a former basketball fanatic.  I followed the Detroit Bad Boy Pistons for some years when Dennis was the young, up and coming defensive threat.  They did lots of stories on him and I was intrigued by them.  What I discovered was that Dennis had serious emotional issues.  Even his family could not understand him.  He moved out of his home to go live with a family that had a young son who was a big fan of his.  Was this move to get daily dosages of attention and admiration?  Is he hoping to have this girl drooling all over him?  Could be.

I  don't like most reality shows.  Of course they are filled with N's.  You'd have to be one to make it on those shows.  Hollywood loves that "drive."  My personal favorite is The Apprentice.  The Donald has to be the ultimate TV Narc (only topped by Howard Stern).  But I watch The Apprentice to see the behaviors of the various players.  I learn a lot about human interaction and the animal nature that comes out in competition even in most high brow environments.

Hiya (((((CeeMee))))

I'd not heard of Dennis Rodman before yesterday, with him being an american and not following basketball myself.  Thank you for the background information.... I didn't know any of this.  Fancy moving in with a fan!  Thank you for posting this though because in a way I feel quite pleased with myself to pick up on this within the first day of the reality TV show.

I think the other scary thing is that not only are they loved but they also have a following of people who want to be like them!  Doesn't say much for society does it?

I watched some of the apprentice.... he said "jump" and everyone else said "how high".  And watching them bend to fit in with him and his needs.  I felt that he would be a nightmare to work for.

Like you, I do find it interesting to watch how people interact, rather than watching it for "entertainment", and I do think I can learn something from it.

Hugs

A lot of the drama of these programmes comes about because the celebs are not getting their N needs met, I think. In real life they easily attract the sort of adulation they crave, but stuck with a group of other famous Ns, they all become more and more desparate for attention. This means that a few members, often the older ones, get forced into non-N roles and usually end up cracking - for example Germaine Greer in the last series, who got cast as the mother figure by the rest of the group and  abruptly left the series half way through! Well, that got her some attention anyway!

I agree, Dennis so far seems the most overtly N but of course the others may just be better at disguising it. My personal sense is that there are some absolute monsters in there. Unless someone like Rula has the nous to work out that Chantelle isn't really famous, I think she stands an excellent chance of getting away with it, since none of the others will be interested enough in her to notice, and she is already doing a great job feeding their N traits.
