My youngest brother has OCPD

I just learned this morning that my brother has been officially diagnosed with OCPD by a psychiatrist. OCPD runs in families.

I suspected he had this or NPD or both. He is very much like my NPD and OCPD mother.

But glad too. Because having a diagnosis for something treatable is having hope...isn't it?

Not despairing at all. This is confirmation that the OCPD runs in families.

My h's father had OCPD and was in the same profession my OCPD brother is in. It is a profession where OCPD is easily hidden because it is an exacting science. This brother may not have NPD and just the OCPD. Like I said in my other post these two disorders have similar behaviors. I suspected one or the other or both.

I expect this happens on a 'spectrum' like most things? Which of the traits do you most identify in him?
Is it possible to have a relationship with him? What's his prognosis?

My brother was diagnosed with schizotypal PD ( it's a complex diagnosis though, he's also head injured and had several episodes of schizophrenia ) He's become a complete loner- even when he's with other people he doesn't interact or barely- but he seems to be muddling along, I enjoyed my last chat with him, he seems happy in his own world. + He's not so paranoid these days since he stopped trying to be 'normal'.

Never mind!  I looked it up and I am surprised that OCD can become a personality disorder.  We had one family member who went through a period of OCD but then it went away for the most part.  But, according to what I have read, OCD is characterized as obsessions and compulsions that the person doesn't really want as opposed to OCPD where the person has to be perfect and in control and in denial.  I'm sorry your brother has this condition.  But, you are absolutely right.  Anxiety disorders run in families.

My h has OCPD as well and has come out of denial.

One of the characteristics is some kind of obsession whether it be a thought process or even cleanliness or something else. My Nmother has an obsession with cleanliness and order. My h with hoarding and bargain hunting. My brother with thoughts. He starts thinking and obsessing and thinks himself right into a depression and severe debilitating anxiety. My h did this too but the program he attended helped him learn how to stop doing it.

I am reading a book about cognitive distortions and how they can cause problems with depression and anxiety. The book tells you how to stop it as well. I am probably going to recommend this book to my brother. How to do it will be the problem. He doesn't know that I know about his condition and diagnosis.
