God Grant Me The Serenity... PLEASEEEEEE
« on: February 27, 2007, 09:14:51 PM »
Any body got any feel-better-isms? Here are some to keep life in perspective:

How will this matter in ten years?

What's the worst thing that can happen?

This too shall pass.

No pain no gain.

How does this matter in the overall picture of your life?

What would you think if this happened to another person. Would it be that big a deal?

Thanks.
Love, Beth

I am experiencing the serenity of a bee trapped in an overturned glass right now. I feel like I am holding a jackhammer switched to "on."

It's my boss again, and his "rules" that he enforces time to time when he has been too busy to notice how things are going. He overreacted to a situation and took it out on me and I am sick of it and have had enough. On the other hand, if I detach, this is really no big deal.

I don't like to be criticized... especially when I am not at fault. But then, as always, I wonder how much of it is my fault. I feel like it must be to some extent (even though I know it is not).

Why can I never feel sure of anything?

I'll tell you one thing, Beth...you've got a poet trapped in there!

Quote
the serenity of a bee trapped in an overturned glass

What a fabulous image. Thanks.

And I really am sorry about your boss. Bleah. Sometimes it's really really hard to have a boss, and you've been really grownup about him.

As to feeling unsure...in my theology class tonight someone spoke about how uncertainty itself might be sacred.

(Okay, it was me.)

Beth, I encourage detachment.  It is simply old tapes that suggest that it is your fault.  Those old tapes need to be identified as such and left alone.  Do not feed them.  Why can't you feel sure of anything?  Because you are thinking that those old tapes have some validity but they don't they are like an old bad habit.  When you identify them as such and immediately replace them with your new tape - I am not at fault it is that crazy man again - you will find them begin to fade away.

God grant me the serenity to ACCEPT the things I cannot change.

I recently realized that the key word in that sentence is ACCEPT.  Not PUT UP WITH, ENDURE.  A good message for those of us with a bit of the martyr in us.

ACCEPT or change the situation or leave.  That is where peace is.

Think I have shared this before here on board, how as a child my dear Aunt gave me a little pretty bookmarker card with " The Serenity Prayer " ......

God grant me the serenity,

to accept the things I cannot change;

courage to change the things I can;

and wisdom to know the difference.

Certainly did help me to combat the challenges of life, one day at a time.

Hey WRITE, the first time I saw this was less than an hour ago on a car bumper.  I loved it and then come here and find it posted by your hand.  How I love such little coincidences.  Thanks - you brightened my day. - GS

Hummm...... I might be able to aply this in my classes. I try my best and many students respond and a few do not. Instead of feeling well for those who do well I feel bad for those who I could not touch. But, they are adults, they are 18 years old. They have choices. It is not me. Someday they will remember. Thank you.

Thanks (((((((((everyone)))))))))))) for all the great phrases and the good thoughts and kind words.
I am feeling good today. Overall I handled things well... it bothered me infinitely less than it would have in the past. I picked up and moved on. It feels a bit false, but goes along with the "fake it 'til you make it" mantra I live by ;)

I love all these quotes and will add them to my  list of "run throughs" when I am feeling low!

A big squeeze, everyone!!!

Wonderful news G. I'm so glad for you that it bothered you infinitely less than it would have in the past.  That is real healing in progress.  It feels a bit false only because it is new.  But it is REAL and if you will focus on it it will become stronger and stronger in your life.  I am so very happy for you. - your friend - Gaining Strength

((( Lupita )))

That's a wonderful aspiration and I feel sure that you will " be the change you want to see in the world " to all your students.

God Bless you.

it's usually attributed to Ghandi; I am in an irritable mood tonight though and tired and head-achey so not much of a light shining from me tonight!

Overall I handled things well... it bothered me infinitely less than it would have in the past. I picked up and moved on. It feels a bit false,

I think you've got to 'fake it til you make it' sometimes...eventually confidence will become second nature.

We've got so used to wearing another person's misery too, that takes some shaking off.

I wrote a poem once about a bee:

Sea-change

I’d
be a bee:
perpetually waiting
expectantly shaking
and moving
under glass.
The pane of silence
would eventually
defeat me
but the bright sun
or its shadows
or the life-call
meanwhile
hopelessly entreat me
to persist.
My sting
intractable
and useless
would hang lifeless
like a stamen,
all the pollen
it was promised
blowing past
and out to sea.
