Tony Sopranos' mother: a fine example of a narcissist!
« on: April 05, 2007, 08:39:22 PM »
Is anybody watching the old reruns of The Sopranos on tv?  The ones made at the first half when the mother of Tony was still alive?
She is such a classic example of a narcissist!
I watch the show now--and see that her behavior is and was exactly like my own mother (a narcissist)--and, thank God, am actually at the point I can chuckle at her behavior now instead of getting upset.  That alone is alot of progress for me, so I'm happy about that.
Guess I was just wondering if anyone on the board was aware of a tv version of a supreme narcissist when you watch the Sopranos?
Unfortunately, the wonderful actress who played the mother, Olivia, died of cancer during filming.  But she did do a superb job of portraying a selfish, self-centered, cold, uncaring narcissist.  Take a look, folks!

Yes, i have watched the show for years and Tony's mother is such a narcissist. It is interesting how she uses emotions that she does not feel in order to manipulate people. She has no conscience either to the point that she sets her own son up for destruction.
Mama has created  another narcissist in her son, Tony. However, Tony seems to have some cracks in his armour.
I think the show is brilliant psychologically.
Some people might think it is violent, and it is sometimes, but the depth of characterization is very rare.
Society needs to know more about psychopaths and sociopaths. This show is like the textbook for it.

We just started watching the Soprano's this passed year,  and it is funny you mention Tony's mom being a N,
because that is the first thing i thought from what little i do grasp about the N personality

my favorite parts of the show are the sessions between Tony and his shrink ( Lorrane Bracko), I love those sessions, Tony is a full fledged sociopath,  what is scarey though is even though my dad was not into crime, Tony's character reminds me alot of my father...

when i first started watching Tony it was scarey how he reminded me of my dad....  I think AJ the son is going to be one hell of a handfull , he is just now showing alot of bahvior problems from growing up in this family

i have to go and rent the final season 6 series, we rented and are now watching season 5 ... which character do you dislike the most for me it is Tony's older uncle ( i dont like him), he reminds me of my father in law (without the crime part)

There was one session where Tony is first telling his shrink about his mom, some of the stuff she was doing, and his shrink pulled out her DSMV bible, and she mentioned to Tony that perhaps his mother had "Borderline Personality Disorder"... she even read some of the traits...

but Tony's love/hate of his mom, made him freak out on his shrink...... he almost hit her....... well my dad was that explosive, then he would turn arround and say to me "your anger is going to hurt or kill someone someday"

and now i see how projection works.... it was not me~~ who was the one who was explosive, in rage but him.... but you grow up thinking this and you are even afraid of your self .. because of their projection

what a tangled mess at times
