I slept in..... eek.

Today I have the first Christmas celebration with my mother's side of the family.  I still have another on Christmas day at my father's.

That means I'm cooking 10 things that would normally take 2 days.... and I'll get it done in just under 10 hours: )

This year, we're going to get to enjoy a deep fried turkey breast (shot with a whooooole bottle of Tobasco, the red stuff)  Absolutely one of my favorite things this meal.

A small turkey deep fried turkey with Butter Jalapeno injection.... very good but mild mild mild.... not my favorite.

We'll have a corn dish, brussell sprouts are back by popular demand, a chick pea and spinach dish with butter, mirepoix and chicken stock ..... don't know why that's so good but it is.

I was going to make a shellfish and champage soup but I can't find fixshbuillion anywhere..... not sure when that happened.

little tomato stacks with fresh mozzarella cheese and basil drizzled with
balsamic dressing that's spiced with a dallop of vidalia sweet onion relish, which makes it wonderful.

Roasted red meat, tiny portion, served with a balsamic fig sauce.... we want everyone's brain to still function when Santa arrives at 8.

I have friends and neighbors coming for dessert, which I just bought.  I was going to make little creme brulees but I can't find an ingredient so.... oh well.  I think we have 3 pies and an apple brown betty, fresh fruit with cream and a cheese board.    If I have time I'll make something chocolaty for my mother's husband..... maybe brownies with some bitterweet chocolated added.  Maybe put them in muffin pans and half baked.  I usually order that half baked cake stuff (REALLY GOOD) from William Sonoma.  Just didn't.

Not sure but tonights another adventure in the kitchen.  Ahhh..... just remembered a couple have to go to store for.

It's cold and overcast here...

::whispering:: Which means we can have a fire (in the fireplace.)

Be very busy for a while; )

Sounds yummy, and I'm glad your inner chef has come back to life!
(I bet your diners are gladder still.)

Well I have realized I have to cook something, a dessert for 8-10.

I saw somebody do this on TV, then googled some recipes, and I actually think I might be capable, so I'm making a Cranberry Upside Down Cake to take to the fanchy shmanchy Xmas Dinnah Pahty Mom and I (thank heaven) have been invited to.

So we'll get past Tuesday.

Whew.

Sounds like you got it covered, Hops.

Only one flipped creme brulee and the mess made when the pot boiled over.... not on my watch but who's pay'in attention?

Most everything is made or at a stage where it just needs finishing off.

The surprise of the night was a sautee pan of mushrooms with tomatoes, garlic, white wine and OH does it smell good.

My Italian BIL surprised us with that nummy dish, looking forward to it.

I'm currently full to the gills with deep fried turkey, butter jalapeno and tobasco flavors.

Have to quit eating now so I have room for later: )

I did it! No idea what it tastes like but it sure looks gorgeous...we'll find out tomorrow!

I'm not a very advanced cook, generally, but I do love to bake now and then. I think I like the alchemy. Amazes me the way things go from liquid to solid, etc. This was fun and not too complex for me.

Hope y'all eat well!

Mom was looking confused so I gave her her presents early. Warm jammies and 2 soft sweaters. She was pleased.

I'm just grateful it's been so simple.

Ho Ho and happy eating, everyone!

love

I was preparing hot cocoa for Santa - went upstairs to get little one's bedroom ready for bed - smelt something burning - thought it might be tree or an electrical something - couldn't find it - very concerned (though the Firestation is less than 1/4 mile away) came downstairs and found - milk scorched and pan black - Oh well

Little one suggested we give Santa milk instead - great idea!!!

I had a cute little propane stove  and a friend brought a goose to cook. The goose had feathers on it.  I could not get the feathers out with pliers, so I dripped wax on the goose ( like waxing your legs, right?) and tried to get the feathers out.  No luck.
So I skinned the goose.

I put it in the oven and after about an hour noticed that there was no smell of cooking goose.  I was busy laughing and having fun.  I looked in the oven and it was not lit. So I lit it......... Next thing I knew I was on the floor across the kitchen.  I had no eyebrows or arm hair and the front of my curly hair was singed to little stubs.

Nevertheless, I carried on and cooked the goose.  It turned out it was stolen from a cranky guy in the neighbourhood. No wonder he was cranky. What with people stealing his geese.

The goose was AWEFUL. Not like in a Christmas Carol at all. There was a big puddle of oil under the bird.  That was the first Christmas dinner I cooked away from home. I was twenty and just married.  So I made a nice orange sauce and everyithing tastes good with a nice orange sause.

Love

I am not a gourmet cook like Lighter, have never been to Europe (but everything that she describes sounds incredible) - but I can make a mean creme brulee.I used to make holiday meals ,especially Thanksgiving, for my circle of friends, who for some reason rarely cook at all (I wonder what this means). 3 turkeys- I would make a tandoori turkey, a garlic-lemon turkey , and a traditional turkey. Everyone had their favorite, and very little would be left over afterward. The tandoori would be assisted by the magic of an Indian lady who teaches cooking- she would make a melange of spices, etc to add. I would make lentil-rice dishes, chapatis and others things as an accompanyment. The garlic-lemon would have halved lemons inside and would be studded with garlic throughout, drizzled with lemon and extra-virgin olive oil, scented with a tiny bit of rosemary, etc. I have never been to France, but I would make what I imagined to be a French -style salad, and vegetables, etc The traditional turkey would still have lemons and Maui onions inside, as the steam keeps it moist- never a dry turkey that way.Fresh herbs, etc and traditional side dishes.

One year we had the dinner at a friends place- she is an incredible artist, and her husband is her manager. Their place is truly beautiful, and immaculate, art everywhere. We brought in platters of turkeys and side dishes, and with the last turkey, I wasn't paying attention, and things began to slip dangerously...Somehow everything landed back on the platter except for a small spill, but it was a close call. The food looked ridiculous, a big mess. However, my friend had been drinking a little too much, was oblivious to my near catastrophe before her very eyes, and saw nothing amiss on the platter either!

Oh!  ::clapping happily::

I'm tingling from your description of spices and turkey/lentil dishes, Changing.  Love the lentils!

The near miss in front of your tipsey friend left a tingle all it;s own; )

Hops..... I think of baking like alchemy too.....  so glad your dish came out nicely and mum was happy with her cozy gifts.

Oh.... and Seastorm.... lol..... your goose story takes the cake, lol!

You get my vote for perservering trooper.

You tackled feathers with pliars and hot wax, skinned a big ol bird then blew your eyebrows off and still got up off the floor and cooked that bird!

Who stole it btw and...... you're right.... a nice sauce can fix up just about anything.

So fun to find this thread :D
