H1N1 in the house
« on: August 11, 2009, 10:47:33 AM »
My kids are missing the first week of school bc they have the flu.

Symptoms for first child were high fever (over 103) gunk in the lungs, tickle in the throat, lots of sneezing and the feeling that a sneeze is trapped and can't come out, headache and stomache, bright red eyeballs, lack of appetite, lethargy and plenty of sleeping.

At the pediatrician's office, they did a nose swab and determined it was swine in about 15 minutes.

The Ped said we should be glad we have it now.....

that it might get worse as time goes on and the rest of us should rub ourselves over the sick child in order to get it ourselves.

He prescribed Tamiflu at $118.00 an Rx.

Double yikes but I'm just so glad it's not more seriouse and that we'll be immune in the future.

::headed back to drugstore::

Must remember to phone school and ask homework be left at front desk: /

Remember that flu kills only people who have other diseases besides. Healthy people only suffer a regular flu. So, knowing that you are a wonderful mother, your kids must be very healthy and will be fine soon.

God bless!!!!!

Hope it all turns out to be just the usual type of flu for y'all...
and that your A/C is in tiptop shape! It's hot & humid here - almost 90 again - and that would just make the flu feel soooooo much worse. Sounds like you've got it under control... make sure to take care of yourself and call in back-up if you feel you're starting to coming down with it.

Mof2,

Ah!  I'm sorry.  We had the breakout right before school went out for the summer.  It will be back in session in two weeks.

Take care of your girls and take care of yourself.  It's a heartache and a worry
when your children are ill.  I'm glad that it's not serious and I'm glad in future you will be immune also.

((((Mof2 and girls))))
some ginger ale to go along with Hops soup!!

Love
Deb

Mo2...

yesterday's Wall St. Journal had a warning about Tamiflu... for kids under 12. Doctors in the UK have found that it only shortens the duration of the illness about a day. Nothing worse than that... but thought you might want to know. Any lessening of symptoms and getting back to their friends sooner, is probably still worthwhile, huh?

How's it going, flu bugs?

Hope you're all snuggled up, sleeping it off, and when you can't, watching ... of course ... BABE.

love,

Thanks for all the kinds words....... we're feeling much better.

The Tamiflu syrup is kind of bitter.... with an artificial berry flavor no kid would enjoy, but.....

I mix it into a yogurt and fresh strawberry smoothie...... goes down fine: )

It's interesting that our school nurse, in charge of 8 schools in our County, has no reported cases of H1N1, besides ours.

We have to bring doctor's notes in order to get the children back in school.

The kids have to be out a minimum of one week, even if they've been fever free for days.

I looked up the CDC's recommendation on sending non symptomatic children to school, when other family members are sick.

They're to be kept at home for 5 days, after the initial symptoms began in the family member, bc that's the most likely time period for symptoms to arise.

My experience has been that our youngest family member had the mildest symptoms...... and the oldest had the most severe.

Amber.... I don't think I would have put the children on tamiflu if I thougt it only knocked off one day of symptoms.  It's cost is about 120.00, though with insurance it was about 90.00 for each Rx.

Not worth putting drugs in my children.... and not worth the cost.

Mo2

Is this flu like a regular flu that follows a flu "course"?          Ami

CB:  If your kids have to get it, and they probaby do......

better that they get it now, or so says my ped.

If it mutates, and turns more dangerous...... your kids with health issues would have been better off getting it sooner.

The flu season's coming up.

Talk to your ped and ask who in your household should have the Tamiflu, if any.

Truth, our symptoms were gone in about 3 days..... though we had to stay away from people for an entire week.

Don't despair..... this too shall pass.

((CB))  Feel better soon.
