That little fig tree I transplanted has figs this year: )
« on: May 03, 2010, 10:10:54 AM »
I went by last week..... and there were 2 baby figs.

I haven't had much planting in my life for a few years now.

My pots have come up nicely from last year.  Hosta and ferns mostly......... Just love the shade plantings.

Planting the children's garden in 3rd grade class was nice.  We put in bulbs, then planted over them with pansies and ornamental cabbages in the colder weather.

Now the bulbs are done, they were lovely, but pansies are still blooming..... purple and white with all the green grass of the bulbs.  Very nice.

I'm trying to muster the energy to plant more with kids now.  It's so difficult with such limited time and so many kids.

Kind of takes all the pleasure out of it, but I think they'll remember this for the rest of their lives, and that makes it worth it.

Sounds satisfying Mo2

My sister's granddaughter cried and cried when a big tree had to be cut down at ther parents' cottage, so my sister helped her through the loss so that the little one came up with the idea of a Memory Garden, to plant in its place.

So each year she tends to it and sad thoughts of the tree are gone, but, as she says, the memories of the tree would always be in her head. She will be 12 on May 6, and has been writing to me for a couple of months, short notes requiring short answers, but she thinks I am funny and I try to entertain her with silly things from my childhood, and have just recently sent her a happy song of mine since I learned she is into music.

She sewed a pillow for me for my birthday and sent me a lovley email card, about how not many aunts would take the time to write to an niece. She is one sharp little cookie, and, oh so sensitive....as am I!

Spring and green growth and the planet's generosity belong to every species thereupon, and not to any location.

That said, I understand attachments to plants, and places....oy.

Mother of 2-

How nice, a fig tree:). I love fruit trees and honey bees etc....  Such sweet and innocent life to nurture.  I think it's so great to involve kids in this, my Father always had a garden.  Nurturing plants teaches kids so many lessons about life, that is so nice you partake in this:)

Figs are so yummy too...

(((CB)))  Thanks for sharing, walking meditation for us both I think.

Hops..... I'm sad that you haven't enjoyed the spring planting.

Yet.

I have hope that you'll come home one day soon, drop everything and just head to the planting beds.

If I was there I'd weed and prepare your beds so all you had to do was contemplate flowers and colors ((Hops.))

Swimmer, I really like to cook with figs.  Pork dishes with balsamic vinegar reductions mmmmm.

I planted a cutting from a local fig tree.... large as a house fig tree..... about 5 years go.

The twigs grown to about 5'x5' and produces a very nice crop of figs.

3 weeks ago I counted almost 100 figs.

I think we sometimes buy great looking plants that don't necessarily do well in our zone.

I had expensive blueberry bushes that died off..... raspberry bushes too.

In the future, I'm just going to take cuttings from wild local varieties and plant them.

It certainly worked with the fig tree.

I will never forget that pork dish.

The sauce was as good as any I've ever had in a fine restaurant.

SO

Good.

I am more comfortable in a garden than anywhere else.  Communing with the flora nourishes my soul; it gives the little girl inside me a reason to dance.

My columbines are blooming - delicate faces with large "eyes" and long graceful "tails."

It's a wonderful time of year.

I don't have a garden this year, but I look forward to finding one with a creek or pond one day soon.

I love the shade plantings more than any other.

Butterfly, I think giving the little girls inside of us a reason to dance should be a priority: )
