OT Ear Candling
« on: September 09, 2010, 10:19:38 AM »
I've been having some ear issues lately so I made an appt to have my ears candled.

The candle is actually a cone of paraffin dipped muslin, or some fabric.  When lit, the smoke travels into the ear canal, creating a vacuum which sucks wax out of the ear, and into the bottom of the cone.

The lady providing the service had never done it before, but the result was still very good.

I will say this, use the small tapered end inside the ear canal.

Use a paper plate to keep the burning ash from falling into your hair.

Have someone with you to make sure everything's safe.

It works, and I'll use that technique in the future: )

Interesting Mo2, I've always wondered how that worked. It's advertised in our chinese medicine shops.

I have occasional hearing problems, but it's my age, not wax!

What does OT stand for?

I have found it works best if you use Debrox in your ears some hours before you candle.

CB, what's Debrox?

I loved the campfire song candling story: )

Guest, OT means off topic...... try candling.

It's soothing, like CB said: )

Mmm I'm soothed Mo2 :D any suggestions for removing liquid collected below the knees and which hasn't shifted for well over 3 months? I'm healthy; just larger than I should be, below the knees. Maybe acupuncture...? Maybe severe acupuncture...

OT = off-topic

Guest, you got edema?

Hope not, but see a doc if it's that sort of puffy swelling...

Gee, as a kid I always heard I should never put anything in my ear. Now I find out it's OK for a mother to shove a flaming candle in there so long as she uses a paper plate (one of those special non flammable ones?) to try and prevent setting her kids hair on fire. Who knew?
I suppose next I'll find out it's actually OK to cram Cheerios up your nose and running with scissors is just good fun so long as you're carrying a protective paper plate. 8)

I think elevation and massage to move the fluids back through the lymph system?

Cut down on sodium.

Sorry your having that problem.

Thanks Mo2. Oddly enough I stopped really enjoying salt over a year ago. Massage! I wouldn't have thought of that but it's so logical. I'm hoping it will all go away once the weather gets colder too.

If a person has excessive wax issues (as I do) a $5 kit from a drug store, which includes a syringe and a carbamide peroxide solution, takes care of it very well.   Some experts even suggest plain old mineral oil is just as effective as the special solution.   Why not try the inexpensive and medically accepted method and see if it has the same positive effects as the candling?

Ummmmm...... my ear was sore from flushing it with mineral oil, then peroxide, then vinegar and alcohol, then flushing it with wather ::slish slish slish slish slish:: and I was just lucky I could get it slished to the point where i could hear a bit.

The ear candling was easy, painless and didn't make me feel like I'd flushed water into me brain cavity.

Never tried ear candling but I know for sure that it's a foolproof method to clean ears. I used to work at a distance learning college and we used to offer lessons on it.
