This may not make sense, but today I was thinking how many people I know 55 and older who have the mind of a child and who are minimally skilled in only a few adult practices.  It sounds like your mom is an OLD child who learned next to no adult skills.

It's all familiar to me. In my larger extended genetic family there are at least two mothers like this. The 'advice' I might give (in theory) to the other child of one would be: it is not your responsibility. You do not have to do anything you don't want to do. In some cases I reckon other people do 'compassion' better than those in the family. I'm one of those cases, at the moment.
