Title: Voicelessness pop quiz!
Post by: Dr. Richard Grossman on December 08, 2013, 08:15:45 PM
OK voicelessness old-timers, here’s a pop quiz for you!  Identify the actress who said:

“I paid school friends to go to the movies with me.  I barely spoke until I was thirty.  (My husband) and I recognized each other as born outsiders…Needing to please has always been my weakness.”

Also, the actress reports that before she (at 26 years of age) and her husband met, she had felt invisible.

Any guesses?  No “googling”!

Richard

P.S.  One hint:  She played roles you would expect a “voiceless” actress to accept.

I'm thinking Garbo

I want to be alone.

Bones:  “Any clues as to how old this actress is?”

Hmmm.  Her age seems younger and younger every day---still living.

tt:  “ …her reclusiveness is rather well known to people my age.”

Excellent!  She spent her late 20’s, along with her husband and infant as a virtual recluse.

teartracks and debkor:  Was it Garbo?

No, but good guess!

Anyone else want to guess?

Richard

Is she middle-aged or Senior Citizen now?

Hi Bones,

She's a "senior citizen,"  and (big hint) her ex-husband who was almost twice her age when they married, died within the past 10 years.

Couldn't be Cher as in Sonny and Cher.

Still thinking.............................................

Good guess, Bones.  But definitely not Cher.  Sonny did so much womanizing, I’m sure Cher felt completely invisible/voiceless after they were married.   Anyone else want to guess before the answer is revealed?

Richard

I also remember how controlling Sonny was.  I remember watching the two of them on a talk show, (can't remember if it was Dick Cavett or some other show), where Sonny told Cher in front of an audience that he was not going to allow her to wear something or other again!  I remember thinking to myself, "WTF?!?!?  Cher is NOT his daughter!  Geez!"  Their divorce was shortly after that fiasco.

I don't think Mia Farrow ever married Woody Allen.  (He's very much alive.)  When she was married to Frank Sinatra, she didn't get pregnant during the marriage.  However, it appeared they remained "Friends with Benefits" after the divorce based on her son's striking physical resemblance to Old Blue Eyes.  (I think Woody Allen is having some angst about that.)  I'm not sure if Andre' Previn is still alive or not.

Hops:  “Mia Farrow?  Is there a prize?”

Nope, not Mia Farrow, but good guess.  The prize:  Induction into the Voicelessness Hall of Fame?  (How’s that for an oxymoron, Green Bean?!!!).  And, of course you get to post your accomplishment on Facebook, Twitter, etc...

Bones: “I also started thinking maybe Bo Derek.”  No, but another good guess.

OK., time for another clue:  The actress in question is, perhaps, best known for her work in European films.

Is she British or American?  If British I'm thinking Helen Mirren?  She might not be the right age.

or Sophia Loren?

Twoapenny:  “Is she British or American?  If British I'm thinking Helen Mirren?  She might not be the right age.”

She’s not British or American, and hence she’s not Helen Mirren. Another good guess!

Lighter:  “I don't know! I don't know! Tell tell tell!”

Soon, soon, soon!

Hops:  “Sophia Loren?”

Nope!

Bones:  “Brigitte Bardot?”

Nope!

Mud:  “Patty Duke. Get it?”

LOL, I got it, but nope!

sKePTiKal:  “Goldie Hawn? (I have no idea why she just popped into my head...) or Sophia Loren?”

Nope and nope!

Oops, I have to make a correction to my first post.  The man she first felt “visible” with was not someone to whom she was married.  They lived together and had a child together.

Two more clues:  She was twice nominated for an Academy Award, but never won, and her movies were rarely “crowd-pleasers.”

Keep trying!

Richard

Ding!  Ding!  Ding!  We have a winner!

And the winner is-------------------------------------------------------------------Izzy *Now*  for her correct answer,  Liv Ullman. Congratulations, Izzy!

You can read the short piece entitled "Born Outsiders" by Judith Thurman in the December 9, 2013 issue of the New Yorker (unfortunately, not available online).

Wow! What a surprise that my chain of thinking took me in a circle around Ingrid Bergman, plus age and Europe were good  clues.

Thanks for the fun!

The cheerleaders ALWAYS win...
or the glamorous country singers...
or somebody.

Hmmmpfff.

But okay, congrats Izz...

Thank you Hops,

...but I am no cheerleader, or glamourous singer.

I am just an elderly lady who saw so many movies from 17 onwards and even kept a scrapbook of all female movie actresses/stars from about the time I was 8. I also go online back to watch the old movies. I thought I would learn about "life". I was hornswoggled!

I am the same with music. I understand we stick to favourites, as those popular as we grew up in our teens.

I just finished an old Hedy Lamarr movie in which she was a loose woman, although there was nothing to see and only a guess from the viewers, who was out to change herself. Now I know why I learned so little when growing up, and the camera always "faded to black".

Have you ever heard one of my "old-fashioned songs?

Wonder if a link works!????

http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=4061979&q=hi&newref=1 (http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=4061979&q=hi&newref=1) Edie

And I will die an unknown-----

Two things I thought I needed when I was back in my 20s was to join Woman's Army, whatever, or go to jail, where I would be told what to do, instead of all the wrong choices I appeared to make. I'm debating about telling that to my brother.....just for the record.

Now the choices are to live out my life becoming weaker and weaker with nothing ahead for me, or to end it sooner.

Love
Izzy

Aww, hon--I was joshing you.
I HAVE heard your singing and I do think you've got glamour in you!

I didn't meant to make you feel melancholy, I'm sorry my joking struck a bruise.

And, thank you for using the word "hornswoggled" -- made my morning.

You're a lot more than you see you are, Izz.

love and admiration,

Hmmmm I am old and I don't know who Pia Zadora is. That was a tough quiz. I love old movies and kow most actresses. Hats of to you Izzy.  Excellent sleuthing..

Was it Charo or Pia?  Or is Charo the same person as Pia?  Maybe I have Alzheimers. Probably.
