I just had a pop up window, red, tell me my computer was infected, and it gave me what a number to call... supposedly Microsoft. I spent an hour going round and round, then told the guy I needed to do research, and would call Microsoft back if I decided to purchase their coverage.
What do you guys know about Microsoft internet security, and what do you guys use?

Hi Lighter,
This is a very common scam. Do not call the number, do not give any information (or money) to the scammer, and do not give the person access to your computer. Simply turn off your computer and restart it. And if it happens again, do the same thing.

Amen.
No reputable tech company would communicate with a customer or software owner through a popup an intrusive popup window.
Or even an unsolicited email. If Microsoft ever conveyed something to users by email --highly doubtful--you should still check it out. Easiest way is god-bless-google. Type into a search engine a few phrases from the suspect message and no doubt the scam stories will be in the results....
Never, ever engage. Don't talk to anyone, don't click, don't reply. (Unless you want to bail your Nigerian penpal out of jail or something...maybe pay his urgent hospital bill from his lates mugging...)
