Hi everybody,
There’s an important article about finding a therapist in this month’s (April, 2022) Consumer Report’s “On Health:"
Find the Right Therapist for You—A comfortable relationship with a counselor can make all the difference
Some quotes:
“No matter which type of therapy you choose, your relationship with the therapist is the most important predictor of growth.”
“Different types of training do not necessarily mean one type of therapist is better than another.”
“Some therapists offer free consultation before you commit. Use that time to learn about the therapist’s interpersonal style and see how comfortable you feel.”
I’m so glad to see the field of psychotherapy finally acknowledging the importance of the relationship between patient and therapist...
We are all living through such difficult times. Please take care,
Richard

Hi Hops,
As the messenger of an unpopular truth, as you can imagine, I received many bullet holes over the years! One of the most important life lessons I learned early in my career was the divergence of truth and status. There was no status in understanding therapy as a very particular and healing kind of relationship. No--one had to be a doctor, an expert in the brand of therapy that one practiced! And practitioners were not going to give up their status, even for the sake of significantly, and sometimes dramatically, changing lives for the better. But given my particular brain, a brain that values truth far more than status, this was not a professional world that I could participate in.
It follows that for me, my work accomplishments are measured one person/patient/message board member at a time. I’m so glad the message board has been helpful to you and others. Your (and other’s) sharing this over the years has made a significant difference in my life.
As always,
Richard
