Title: A "Little Voice" in the movies
Post by: Dr. Richard Grossman on July 30, 2003, 11:59:48 PM
For those who can stomach a documentary about child sexual abuse, Capturing the Friedmans is a must see for those interested in voicelessness.  Mrs. Friedman is a classic, pained "little voice," (see http://www.voicelessness.com/littlevoices.html) struggling to stand up to the craziness thrust upon her by a bizaare, domineering, outwardly jolly quartet:  her husband and three sons.  One roots for her throughout the movie to stand up to the bullying,  but she is demonized and drowned out when she does not toe the family line.  Many on this board can relate--and will cry, as I did, when Mrs. Friedman finally escapes.  A terrific and horrifying documentary--highly recommended for those who have experienced voicelessness.

Hi Lupita,

It is a true story.  Originally the film maker set out to make a documentary about a clown in Manhattan (one of the sons)--but then discovered the story of the Friedman's.  Well worth a view...

Best,

Richard

I do not think I should see the movie. Too labil mood. But, I would love to know what happened to Elaine Friedman. Is she still alive? Or not?
I have been searching in the internet and can hardly find articles about what happened to her after 2003. Everything I have found is about the movie.
No Elaine Biography. I found a website fro Jessy to raise funds for his appeal.
Does anybody know what happened with her after 2003?
Thank you.

My question is after 2003. The movie goes only to 2003. So, if somebody tells me what happened to her after 2003, would not affect those seeing the movie. If you know that, can you just PM me? Thank you so much.

Funny this movie should come up again.  Dr. G has spoken about it before.  I find that Capturing the Friedmans is a perfect illustration of a dysfunctional family and how it works.  The children and the father are absolutely aligned against the mother on the side of the father, with whom they have a very sick, distorted relationship masked as love.  There is a need, a drive to hold on to the appearance of a good, loving, kind family even as the family spirals down into  chaos -- and that overwhelming need surpasses any other, even in the mother, who is I think the healthiest of the entire family.  She knows something is wrong and will speak about it.  Would that other families and places of dysfunction have someone who can speak up without being silenced by the other members.  And they try to silence her, the mother, visciously at times.  That is brilliantly shown in the way the movie is edited.

It is also very disturbing that one of the sons is a clown, working with children -- although after watching the movie you'll certainly understand why.

You're the clown for talking ahead about the movie. Let each person figure out for herself-- we might have a different viewpoint from you.

Sheesh it's like telling in advance who the killer is in a murder mystery,

Want to write about a movie, go to their site and post your review.

Thank you for leaving me alone

This is my voice too!

Dear Izz and Lea, can you let us know when you have seen it?
I am really interested and would like to talk about it when you are ready. If possible.
Izzi, where do I find her will?
Thanks

Dear Lupita

Yes, I would love to discuss it, probably best to do so on a new thread though.

The dvd should arrive tomorrow.

Hope your day is going well for you.

sorry that my DVD is out of stock and will be shipped when they can (I ordered 3 others with it and that will hold them all up._

Please discuss by PM rather than on the board.
I hate to throw water on your new thread

Google with the proper words, including her name and 'Last Will and Testament' in quotes. I guess. just think of applicable words.

Thought about it afterward Izzy and it would not seem right to discuss it any case, for the sake of future newbies.

Sorry your DVD's are going to be delayed, I get so disappointed when that happens to me, with a DVD or Book order.

Just pulled a zipper across my mouth, as in Uncle Buck DVD  :)

Shan't say a single word.

Love, Leah

I did not know there were restrictions. It is OK. I do not care anymore. I will not do something that will bother somebody.

I would love to discuss it by PM with you.

If you would wish to do so, I shall leave that with you to decide for yourself, just let me know.

Dear Lupita,

As you know, for I have written of it often enough, I do not engage in the PM Land stuff and nonsense, instead prefer to write what I wish to voice, here, openly onto the board.

However, very bravely, and amazingly, I made the offer to you.

Rest assured, I will not do so again.

Love, Leah

OK dear friends, I cant resist. I will have to see it.

Dear Lupita,

I am sorry I have upset you about discussing this before I am able to see the movie. and back orders are 2-8 weeks

--but when I saw that you planned on seeing it (second quote) I expected there would be no need for a long discussion about it, just a comment on what one thought and why in a PM.

Regrets

Thank you. I am too sensitive. I get discouraged very easily. Do not worry. Thank you. It is not you.
God bless you.

I saw this film when it was first released, somehow it reminded me of Fritz Lang's "M", in more ways than the subject matter alone.
