Caught
I caught him looking in that space today
The one where my heart used to feel
It has become a cold silenced place for him
A place he feels he owns
I heard him use words of kindness and compassion
As if sincerity were more than some multi-syllable word
He believes his words paint scenes of serenity
His words have no longer have a voice
I caught him looking into that space today
The space I believed we built
The one with love and respect, a place to put our roots
You know the one, the old abandoned place no one goes
He thinks he has a hold on me
A mere “I really do care” serves as his bandage
He has many weapons in his arsenal
But his weapon of choice is “I love you”
I caught him looking in that space today
The one where he thinks he still lives
He seems to feel right at home
He believes he never left
A flash of a smile, a deep meaningful stare, this is all it takes
The omnipotent presence of a narcissist is all consuming
All is forgiven in a blink of an eye, a touch of a hand
He cannot see past his own distortions
I caught him looking in that space today
The one he thinks I can’t rid him of
I caught him looking in that space today
Perhaps someone should tell him no one’s home
