Title: How much do therapists charge?
Post by: pink on February 04, 2006, 01:19:39 AM
The only person I know that has a therapist gets it through her insurance and doesn't know the cost.

Thought I might brace myself by asking here to get an idea. Does anyone know? I don't have any kind of insurance so it will be all out of my own pocket.

Thanks

Therapist costs depends upon their qualifications. LCSW fees ($100+ in NYC) are significantly less than PhD Psychologists ($150 for a PhD JUngian analyst in NYC). Psychiatrists charge the most ($200-250+ in NYC) Group therapy at $50 per session.

Many will accept sliding scale, so discuss your situation up front. Also, many will see you twice a week, at least down the road if you are in a crunch, so discuss this possibility up front.

pink,
I paid $130 per 50 minute session with a PhD psychologist in a relatively large midwestern city.  I have a medical savings account with a high deductible so much of it wasn't covered.  I did not shop around as he came highly recommended and we immediately connected, so I don't know how that compares to others in my area.

Good luck.

Ditto everythig Bean said, and others too.
I went to a community free mental health clinic for a while and got excellent help.
Another time I was in group therapy run by a large public hospital's psychiatric department.
People there had far greater pain than I, and I learned a great deal from it.

I think group therapy can be a very healing option too, and it's often free or waaay cheaper.
The 12-step groups are also all free, as are church covenant groups, things like that.
In fact someone from my church called me the other night to tell me Emotions Anonymous is meeting at my church.

Good luck, let us know...

My therapist is £40 for fifty minutes.  I can't afford it, but I certainly can't afford not to have it...
