In reading a book entitled, "Destructive Emotions: How can we overcome them?  A scientific dialogue with the Dalai Lama" I came across  the work of Richard Davidson, PhD at the Univ. of Wisc.  He is using brain imaging to study emotion and the effects of meditation on the brain.  Andrew Weil has written an interesting article highlighting Davidson's work for Time magazine.

This concept is very interesting to me as a tangible way to effect my own healing.  I hope that I might find some others interested in this topic.  - Gaining Strength

Understanding how the brain works is so interesting .

I have been reading about these important glands that produce hormones and adrenaline.(I belive there are two others above the amygdala)

The amygdala produces hormones that effect the way the brain responds to fear and anger and expression of negative emotions.

GS this is such a good article showing images of the monks brain's  in mediation. 8)

I find any talk about the brain really scarey, because I struggle to maintain sanity a lot of the time, and it really frightens me.  Daft, but there it is.  But it does sound like a very interesting area of research.

You know how if you're any kind of reader - you've got a handful of books you won't part with - they've changed your life?

Well, this is one of them for me.

I literally have underlined and underscored and notated so many things in the this book. I also filled a small notebook with my own notes. It's an incredibly eye-opening book. I had to deal with an N in my life who had a problem with anger management, so perhaps that's why it was so fascinating for me.

Don't let the textbook feel or the dalai lama/buddhist influence deter you from reading this book. The buddhist influence is simply informational and fascinating and you come to truly appreciate the human "respect" that the Dalai Lama has for every single creature.

If you ever felt the need to control yourself better in conflict situations, this book will do wonders for you. Or if you are on the other side, and wish that someone else did a better job, it will help you understand why they are not/cannot.

The book, "Emotional Intelligence" by Daniel Goleman is an obvious next choice after reading this.

Oh, I LOVE Goleman's book "Vital Lies - Simple Truths: the Psychology of Self-Deception". He's brilliant, just brilliant!
