Title: thanks to ?? diuretic/potassium
Post by: isittoolate on May 01, 2007, 07:08:31 PM
I want to thank whoever told be about the subject matter--diuretic that does not deplete potassium

When this came up at the doctor's, it was a resident who attended me and told me my potassium rate but not to be concerned, just do---yada, yada,

I couldn't complete this because of how my legs swelled without the diuretic. I posted a picture here..

Today was my yearly checkup and I told the Dr. that the test have never been completed. He told me my potassium level and that it was dangerously low and told me what could happen, and one is the weakness in my legs that has caused me to fall so much.

He has written me a prescription for another diuretic that does nor deplete the potassium and will see me in 3 weeks.

I'm not getting old after all. I might feel 65 again!!!

YAYyyyyyyyyyyyy

Izzy

P.S. I was quite weak today and nearly fell getting the 'chair out of the car at the office and could hardly get up on the examining table.

And, Izzy...he prescribed replacement potassium, right?  Because you need that replenished pronto, and probably faster than you could get by supplementing dietarily.

I'm so glad you got that taken care of, Iz.  That's really serious.

Thanks CB

He said I could have DIED!!

When I see him in 3 weeks to test my blood, he will give me a potassium supplement if things haven't changed. Last test was in the middle of ther 'back-door-trots" that threw things off apparently. I never know what to believe.

In the meantime, I am happy to know what caused the weakness, and it's not OLD AGE! Yippee -I _O _K _A

Love Izzy

Hi Iz --- the person who mentioned potassium sparing diuretics... was me, she said modestly

and I'm so glad I said something. So glad you saw the doc.

Now - eat bananas.

You can supplement with over the counter potassium gluconate tablets, which are cheap, and NuSalt KCl salt substitute, which in the States is ridiculously overpriced... but eat bananas, and see how you feel. Probably you shouldn't supplement til you see the doc again, but if you feel dizzy, and especially if you don't feel stronger within the next 24 hours, give him a call.

Yes, you could have died. No wonder you were falling. Thank goodness your doctor did something!

Edit in: here in the States we have something called ThermoTabs which have sodium and potassium in them. when I get the Trotskyites, I take those. Talk to your doc when you go back and see if there's something equivalent he'd recommend for you. He'll be the best person to advise you about that, since your electrolyte balance will be affected by whatever meds you are on...

Oh, Thank you, Stormy (http://www.slrkelowna.ca/rose2.gif)(http://www.slrkelowna.ca/rose2.gif)

Thanks for everything. I'm sure all will be well now, as I have never trusted this doctor. He seems absentminded, and since you mentioned an alternative med first, I believed.!!!!!! Oh I might have more faith in him after all.

He mentioned more things and he said he worries about me,,,,,,,yada , yada, I thought he never thought about me until I showed up for an appointment.

He spoke about flu and pneumonia shots for this Fall--in clinics!

He is sending me for a Sigmoidoscopy, but it will take a YEAR for an appointment  ----but I hate that--   I could tell you a story about my barium enema some years ago. Painted all the walls pink!

I'll talk also with my Pharmacist, as he is VERY good to me.
xx

Hey, Iz,

I was just thinking about your potassium problem and wondering if you were feeling any better?  Are your legs still swollen?

I posted this elsewhere--forgot I had a thread

I have the new meds that don't deplete the potassium, swelling was all gone anyway as I had gone back to the other diuretic.

I have another blood test in 2 weeks to see what is happening and also have been checkiing on the foods---I had next to given up potatoes--- ah well.
