Just thought I would share today's 'Quote for the Day' ...
I fling my past behind me like a robe, worn threadbare, in the seams and out of date. I have outgrown it.
By Eller Wheller Wilcox
This simple quote has spoken volumes to my heart today.
The garment of emotional and physical abuse enrobed upon me has finally wore threadbare
and for that I am truly thankful.

I really, really like that quote even though it has just come home to me how much I am carrying my past with me in ways I did not realize (co-dependency!). But the quote is an inspiration and a guiding principle. Thanks for posting it Leah.

Why thank you Iphi for your encouraging response as I was a little nervous about creating the thread posting. Bless you, Leah x

Ironically, years ago I picked up a bathrobe cheap, just until I got something I liked more. Over time it became a very disreputable garment, especially because it was terry and my cats' claws would pick threads out of it so it had all these little hangy threads. But there was nothing "wrong" with it. Also over time I became disenchanted with its intense teal color. But I just couldn't throw it away with 'use' left in it and yet it never seemed to get used up.
Last month I just got sick of it and tossed it. Didn't even cut it up for rags or anything. Now I don't have a bathrobe at all, but I just don't care. That dumb bathrobe was like this millstone around my neck!

It's odd the things that turn out to be a propos or to have a metaphorical lesson in them.
This book I am reading addresses the question of 'how do we put down the past?'
The book says "Just put it down. How do you drop a hot coal? You just drop it."
It also says the way to drop things is to allow yourself to realize they are not you. To be very present and conscious that it is not you. You can throw an old robe away - because you are not confused about whether it is 'you' or not. It's just an old robe, not you at all.
That's what the book says and while I am having trouble actually applying it, it seemed worth sharing. It would be selfish to wait until I mastered it (which might be never) before I shared the idea!

Janet,
Never heard of Eller Wheller Wilcox - just happened to be on my daily 'quote for the day' email.
The words in context had such a profound effect with personal insight and meaning.

Yes, Leah.

This is a tangent but it reminds me that our stuff is not us...
and how these thoughts could help with decluttering too.
