From just ONE of the letters in response to his Since You Asked ("I Peed in My Pants in Third Grade and Now I'm Scared to Sing") column a couple days back on www.Salon.com (http://www.Salon.com)

Hope somebody reads it. I was THAT child. (Minus the pee, but I'm in there...)

Dear Hops,
  What powerful  and poignant writing that is.                                                                                                        I started having a "phobia" about throwing up very young. I guess that having these types of fears is not that unusual.Thank God,it never happened ,but every day of my school life from first grade on,I was worried about it( and still do-- Gulp).
 The articles and letters seem to be about "voicelessness". They  look at our "traumas' in a "different" way. We can take our life and our pain and own it. Then, we can use it to be of service to others---YIKES. Our pain can be transformed. Those letters deeply touched me. I will not forget the descriptions of people "turning on themselves". People had so lost their person hood that they could not raise their  hand to use the bathroom.

Okay Cary Tennis completely distracted me this morning Hops!  I read the link about how you have to love yourself without dinner and a movie or a proposal or a reason or a deadline (that was the Younger & Less Talented Sister letter).  Loved it!  And I read the one about the lady who, after being a mild mannered doormat all her life, has suddenly become a spitting Cruella when crossed - that was great too.  And of course I read about poor spazzy pee girl who was afraid to ask to go to the bathroom.  It's so reassuring to be among the humans and not the Pod People or the Delusionists. 

Still have yet to read the discussion of the letters - will try to at some point!

I don't know if I shared it before but..... there was a girl in my 3rd grade homeroom who did pee in her chair.

The teacher kept asking her if she needed to go to the bathroom.... as the puddle grew and grew around her: (

She kept saying.... "no mam"  over and over.....

she must have been horrified.... certainly denial wasn't work'in for her.

One of the wise-ass boys yelled.........

"If you can't swim.... jump for the lights!"

it lightened the mood but..... it was agony for some: /
