Title: Lap Band Update
Post by: Overcomer on March 28, 2008, 08:31:07 AM
Well my weight loss has been pretty slow-25 Pounds in six months.  Then he tightened it and I felt we finally found that sweet spot where the weight would start dropping.  One week after that fill I got the flu and started throwing up-well my band slipped.  He said I was the only one in his practice who had their band slip and he was concerned that if they took the saline out and it did not correct itself I would have to have more surgery to correct it.  I went in and it corrected itself!

So now I have to start over and fill it gradually.  I have learned so things and will try to NOT throw up.  Hard because if you eat too quickly or eat the wrong foods it gets stuck and the only way to get it out is to throw up!

What do you mean you went in and corrected it yourself, Kelly?
I realize, as I heal, that I punish myself with food. I over or undereat as a way to deal with my belief system that I am worthless and should be punished. Food is the object I use to effect this punishment on myself.
I think I saw that I don't need to punish myself anymore. I hope so.
I was doing it so I could reinforce(subconsciously) the belief that I was "bad", worthless and then I would not have cognitive dissonance, which happens when you cannot put new beliefs over old ones.
You have to change the old ones or reject the new ones, but the two will NOT exist ,together. Our minds cannot allow it.
I am thinking that you may be using food in the same way. Compost what does not fit.
I hope all goes well with the lap band.
Understanding some of the roots of food issues is important(IMO), no matter what our actual weight is. I still have food issues and I am at my ideal weight, now.
The food issues are emotional, not about food itself(IME)              Love   Ami

I know that 25lbs in 6 mongth is not what you hoped for but on the positive side it is a nice loss.  I know so little about how the lap band works - tell me what you mean by "starting over and fill it gradually."  Are you pleased with this adjustment and hopeful that you will be back on the weight loss track you had hoped for?

How much weight loss is your goal?  Is your doctor pleased for you or concerned?

And last of all - are you still glad you had the procedure?

When the band slipped the only way to deal with it was to loosen the band.  In the month it has been loosened and I could eat anything I wanted again I gained 7 Pounds.  When they did the x ray they saw that the slip had gone back to the way it was.  So now they will gradually tighten it and the restriction will increase until I cannot eat as much.  My goal is to lose 80 Pounds total but they told me at my age it could take 2 Years to lose it all.  I have 30 To lose where I started before it all

Two years is a good pace, Kel.
Your body will adapt to it as you learn to pace your eating.

I've been watching a great show called I Can Make You Thin on TLC on Sunday nights at 9:00.
He summarizes a bunch of really helpful concepts.

You can read about it at www.tlc.com/thin (http://www.tlc.com/thin)

I know you are disappointed about your progress but I want to celebrate the 20 you have lost.  That is fantastic.  Don't miss the celebration.  Don't discount what you have accomplished.  You can't get to 30 without getting to 20 first and you can't get to 80 without getting to 30.  If 20 isn't good enough then you will discourage yourself.  I am proud of you.  You are losing weight - the speed is not the thing the losing is the key and the more you focus on the the prouder you will be and when you are proud you will be encouraged and keep going.  Be proud and feel encouraged.  It makes the journey easier and more joyful.  Remember that the journey is as important as the destination.  I'm proud of you!!!

I watched that show as well Hops.  He was saying pretty much the same thing as the people at the bariatric center-eat slow.  But I cannot agree with the eat whatever you want philosophy-I get into trouble with ice cream type stuff-I have been trying to make smoothies to curb that need for frozen foods.  Thanks GS for the encouraging words.  I think a slower pace will help my skin shrink better.  But no matter-gravity is getting the best of me anyway!

OC have you tried Alli? I have heard very good comments about it and it is an over the counter med. It is a cousin of Zenical in low doses.

Love to you.
