hi
When I was growing up, my mother had good chinaware and good silverware. She had a 'silence cloth' to put under the lace tablecloth and this was used for Xmas, New Years, or any other reason we ate in the dining room. Other people did too.
I and my 3 sisters, as well as other girls we knew, at reaching a point in life, began our 'Hope Chests". My Aunt have me a sugar spoon from a good pattern that was meant to be the beginning of the silverware I would collect. I had a choice already. It was Flair. I was collecting it set by set or piece by piece sometime after 1956 when it came on the market in Sears catalogue. I ended up with 12 place settings. (I did what other girls did but I never stopped and asked myself who would come for dinner, with only the vague fact in mind that I might get married and have the family to dinner....as happened in Mom's life)
Then I found the most lovely china pattern, 'Starburst" blue and silver starbursts, not messy, on a white backgrounf. The dinner plates have a 'dip' in the centre where the excess 'gravy or whatever juices' will collect and not be at the edgs to slop off.. the next fine feature was the cup handles. There was such comfort and no way it felt they would slip.
3 sets of salt and pepper, 12 coasters/ashtrays,
Well 12 place settings and all this is packed in 3 boxes in my closet here. I packed it from my china cabinet in Ontario and it is still in the same boxes 10 years later. I don't even know if anything is broken, considering the way the N treated my belongings.
I gave my silverware chest and silverware to my daughter at Xmas one year and planned on this chinaware but SHE and her generation were not having "12 for dinner".
I used them always with Joe's family for dinner and even toward the end when just 'Charlie' came to dinner.
I think I could call someone to come and remove those boxes to get them out of my way almost as though they were garbage and taking up space.
Who buys 12 place settings?
I could divide into 2 x 6 place settings or 3 x 4 place settings. I did advertize that way once with no response.
I just don't know what to do with them----even if I could SELL them---but it is such a flipping shame they are going to waste.

Hi Iz,
Don't have advice, but I do remember how hard it was for me to part with my 'collectibles' that no one seemed too interested in. When it comes to 'partings', it helps me to ceremonialize the parting. Anything from journaling about it to you name it.
Mid century modern is hot, but probably hasn't come into its own just yet. Your china in particular represents that era very well. It's Franciscan, right? There will never be another time like it for it represents such a short period in history.

Thanks teartracks
I am quite clueles about period pieces.
Thanks Hops
...but this is Easterling Of Canada and appears to be not in business and won't mean anything to anyone. I might as well be 12 place settings from Dairy Queen
Well Live and Learn, as I was about 18 when I bought this. It's just so lovely and not 'crowded' like many patterns.
Ok Question for you or anyone who reads this. When a gal is getting married these days, where does she go for 'good china'?-----just a dfferent store from where she bought her everyday Plates.? Wal-Mart vs.The Bargain Store?
I feel so stupid, in a way, for having a Hope Chest , instead of a Hopeless Chest, and being stuck with expensive things.
Thanks for the llink
Love

Hi Iz,
Mid century modern is my favorite, favorite. The period was 1933 to 1965. I like simple styles and to me that's the charm of it, plus the short period it represents. There will never be another time like it. So distinct. Very minimalist.
Here's a Wiki link. It lists most of the 'artists' of the time for different categories from household items like yours all the way to architecture. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-Century_modern
Mid century modern doesn't suit the taste of everyone. As a result, I think its importance and collectibility is often overlooked.
I think in household items, those with the atom symbol may be the most desirable.
I'm no expert, but I do like it.

Iz: I wanted to sell my mom's princess china - again - 12 place settings.
Try www.replacements.com. See if they carry your pattern... and there's a button to contact them about selling; they'll send you a price list with all the pieces... then you can see if it's even worth selling through them. They're a might particular about how things are packed for shipping; but on the other hand, I can understand why.
In my case, they weren't offering enough per piece (they make a good bit when they resell) to make it worth while.
I'm eventually going to get around to finding a nicer consignment shop and try to sell it that way. I'm short one dinner plate, due to N-ex #1 throwing it at me.

How about give it to your daughter??

Hi OC
I gave my silverware chest and silverware to my daughter at Xmas one year and planned on this chinaware but SHE and her generation were not having "12 for dinner".
Always a good idea with many things but in this case.....no!

Iz,
Have you checked out e-bay and see how they sell China and what China is on there...maybe that will give you some ideas. I did this with some books I have and almost dropped dead when I had seen a Stephen King, 1st edition, the Stand was listed for 450.00 ..who knew?
