Hi CC...
Would you like a regular meditative practice?
Maybe a meditation group?
One of my favorite places of peace is Quaker meeting.
(I'm not Quaker, but I feel connected to it.)
I like the idea of Buddhist meditation too, sitting in a group that focuses only on compassion.
You deserve compassion for your earned jumpiness. Lots of it.
Maybe one day after a lot of loving practicing of being focusedly nice to yourself, which meditation at least is...you'd discover it had seeped away.

I hadn't thought about meditation. Thanks for the idea! I do use relaxation techniques, but perhaps I need to have more focus when trying it in public. Meditation very well might help with that.
I'm not sure a group would work b/c trying to relax in a group....of people I don't know......eek. With humans in the same room...I can't even imagine not being a wreck.
