My N-mother asked me to come over to her house and cook Thanksgiving dinner for her husband's family. Of course I'm homeless and there are empty rooms in their house and I'm otherwise not welcome in their home.

Wow!
Let me guess, her picture is next to the definition of unmitigated gall?

I am so sorry, Muffin.
I don't know what to say to that.

Gawd! NWomb-Donor is a REAL B*TCH, treating you like a servant or slave!!!! :P
Tell her Royal !@#$-ness you have other plans that DON'T INCLUDE HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She should go F herself!

sounds a lot like my dear sainted mother -- but eventually she died -- she thinks she has you where she wants you now -- going somewhere and making a nice dinner etc might be better than being in a homeless shelter -- except for who it is -- you've made it this far -- I pray for you daily. I hope you have a thanksgiving that brings you hope and peace and I do believe it possible even in your current circumstances. You deserve a string of miracles! Biddy

Muffin:
What did you tell your mother?
I want so badly for you to sleep in a private room without distractions......
But that won't happen in your mother's home either.

OH MB... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think you now have the perfect illustration for life, of why you prefer to be NC. My reaction was like Bones'... except I'd also make a point to thank her for the invitation, and tell her that you have a previous commitment already.
She doesn't have to know the commitment is to saving yourself from her.

Oh well PUT, PR...
I was thinking an anonymous copy of "Cinderella" left on her porch.
But icy courtesy probably makes more sense.
I'm really sorry MB.
I'm always a Thanksgiving stray. This time I invited a family-less girlfriend over.
We'll each pick a DVD and eat tofu that neither of us cooks. Just keep our heads down
until the waves and shouts of nuclear family joy stop echoing up and down the streets...
I think volunteering is the best plan for holidays, when family is painful.
