Being prepared is making me feel safer
« on: November 01, 2007, 03:44:08 PM »
I have been working for the last little while to get prepared.  I now have three months ( working up to a years worth) of food storage and household supplies and am finishing up my 72 hour kits this week.  I got us all backpacks so we can just grab and go.   Just waiting for a few things that I ordered to come in the mail so I can finish up and then add mini kits for the cars.  My church is really pushing it for all the members to have these things in order.  So that in case of any emergency, personal or otherwise, we are ready.   In light of the fires in Ca and other events around our world, it feels good to be prepared.  Where I live, I have only one road out and one grocery store.  I want to make sure I can get water or gasoline or supplies from my storage if I need to.

If any of you know me at all, you know that feeling safe is a big issue for me.  And I just wanted to share that this little step really helps me feel physically safer and self sufficient.  That is also helping my emotional safety stuff.  And I am really grateful.  I have also got the preparedness "bug".  I get giddy when I see all my stuff.....flashlights, tube tents, first aid kits and everything else organized.

Thanks for letting me share.

Poppy

Pops, I really understand the need to feel safe. A small thing like opening the fridge and seeing food does it for me on some days.

Glad you're taking care of yourself.

Thanks Poppy,
Being prepared is about survival.
Katrina happened here and looking around, it is amazing and awesome that it actually happened.
We usually get prepared for hurricanes, leave and come back to clean-up the mess.
This time was different.  It was mostly gone and survival became the only thing that mattered.
No gas, water, lights, food.  Even gas cans.
First thing I do when I go into a place is know how to get out too.
I am a surviver and my thinking is focused on being prepared too.
Thanks BR

BR, want to share a little of your Katrina story?

I will wear my Mardi Gras beads today.

::grabbing chest::

Oh Lord, Poppy!

I can't wrap my mind around that kind of talk right now.... though I understand it and once had a discussion with the author of a book on that kind of preparation.

Good for you....::sigh::

The "one road out" stuff made my stomach flip.

Never hurts to be prepared.

Also.... remember to stock food that your family normally eats.  If things go all wrong.... you need familiar comforts.  Not spam and crackers and prunes, ya know?
