Songs Against N-ness
« on: June 12, 2005, 04:10:08 AM »
I have a favorite song that inspires me when I get tired of all the n-hood in my world.  It is that Gloria Gaynor song, "I Will Survive".  This song is such a strong affirmation for me, it still gives me chills after a million hearings (and singings!).   I would like to know if others have a favorite lyric that inspires them.  Here is a quote, if there is anybody left who has not heard it.

First I was afraid
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live without you
By my side

But then I spent so many nights just thinking
How you did me wrong
That I grew strong
And I learned how to get along....

Mine is:

"Kiss from a Rose" by Seal

"Now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the grave...

I've been kissed by a rose on the grave,
I've been kissed by a rose
I've been kissed by a rose on the grave,"

The reason I think is because to me it feels like I've known the beauty of a rose and been jabbed by it's thorns and this song just feels like the description of the kiss of something deceptive, lovely but capable of great and sharp cutting with it's thorns, like a sweet smelling rose from a grave, which wouldn't be there if there weren't a death, who's perfume scent is lost in the grave yard, who's kiss lights up and makes clear, the gloom, the clouded confusion, the fog.....or it's just something weird, that I can't put into words properly but seems to represent my learning, my eye opening, my new way of seeing.... roses.  Where before, they were just nice flowers, now I see their danger, their addiction, their power, the pleasure and the pain.

Okay, these songs are more of how we feel when we finally identify what N is and who these people are....
Since music is HUGE in my life, I will search for more "empowering" (as in after identification of N...what do we do) stuff and post later.  If nothing else, someone will be inspired to go buy some great music!!!!

Here's a few  from a fantastic group, Guster, from their cd "Lost and Gone Forever". I would swear, not knowing the guys, that this cd has a lot of writing that has to do with N's (and various other personality disorders).
Practically the whole CD.

This first song, I think is part sarcastic, as in explaining the N's perspective and part is an "up yours" to the N, as in where they came from doesn't matter.....we are just better off without them. I've added punctuation to help reading, but there is a lot of "behind the lead" vocals stuff going on, that helps with the several perspective thing...
Anyway, great pop/rock and songwriting, and the musicianship and vocals are outstanding, also. (oh, just buy the cd).

I always think of my ex with this one....especially the father thing....

"Happier"

Say goodbye, lose your friends
make them go, don't need them around
'cause it's time, lose your friends
make them go, was never supposed to be like this.
They were to weak, to prone to break,
their needs too deep, their skins too thin.
By now, you took what was to take,
tear it apart and start again.

So go on, if it will make you happier.
It got you this far, do what you have to.

You've wasted every moment of your Saturdays
and your Sundays.
You're wasted from the boredom,
was never supposed to be like this.
Like your father said, just do what was done unto you
Always
In your father's steps, you do what was done unto you
it won't be hard to start again.

So go on, if it will make you happier.
It got you this far, do what you have to.
And you're gone now, and did it make you happier?
Was it that hard? did what you had to.

(Well you've known this would come)
and you've left me alone
you're lost and you're gone
(don't take it so seriously)

Go on and get going, I'm fine on my own
it got you this far
finally got it figured out.
One more inch, you son of a bitch,
been a waste of my time
Always
Now you're half awake, you bend til you break
you make the same mistakes
Always

So go on, if this will make you happier
it got you this far, did what you had to.
And you're gone now, and did it make you happier?
Was it that hard?  did what you had to.

Here's another:"Either Way"

Were you almost kind, you were almost true,
don't let me see that other side of you.
You have learned in time that you must be cruel
I'll have to wait to get the best of you
poisoning everything you say, don't you don't you,
wonder what difference does it make either way.

You were almost kind, you were almost true,
why give away that other side of you.
happens every time, so it must be true,
step on a kid, he'll grow up hating you.
poisoning .........either way.

Were you ever kind were you always cruel
who has ever seen that other side of you.
happened evey time so it must be true,
where did you learn it's either him or you.
Poisoning.........either way.

You have learned in time, that you must be cruel,
I'll have to wait to get the best of you....
Poisoning......either way.

It's pretty rare that the same album contains both a powerful statement of the negative in life ("The Nagging Dark") and a wry, humorous antidote for it ("Almost Fed Up with the Blues"), but that's what you can find on John Hiatt's "Beneath This Gruff Exterior," along with a lot of fine guitar playing.  If you happen to be near anywhere he's playing this summer, and you've never been, he gives a great concert.

Anyway, a thought for the day, from "Almost Fed Up with the Blues":

There's a woman, a car, and a bank note due,
But I'm gonna leave that up to you,
'Cause I'm almost fed up with the blues.
I'll get up your mountain and down again,
But what are you gonna do, my friend,
when you're almost fed up with the blues?

If it don't kill me,
it thrills me,
but somebody always bills me,
And I'm almost fed up with the blues.
It's a gut check,
a train wreck,
with all of the usual suspects,
And I'm almost fed up with the blues.

If these blues don't stop hurtin' me,
It's curtains for my misery,
'Cause I'm almost fed up with the blues.
Might get a job, or join a club,
'Cause buddy, I've whittled it down to the nub,
And I'm almost fed up with the blues.

OOOOH, Daylily.  I'm a huge John Hiatt fan, thanks to my fiance.  When we first got "back" together, we made each other cd compilations that summed up our feelings. One song he included was "Have a Little Faith in Me".  He is one of the best songwriters ever, IMO.

What about anything by Alanis Morissette?

For example:

I won't see my dear friends as much
Male friends especially, I'l no longer be in touch
I'll change my hobbies to match yours

I'll stop reading my favorite books
I won't spend all this selfish time alone
I'll cater to you and hang on your every word

...I'll redefine self-sacrifice
Live my life as apologetic comporimise
I know you'd leave if I rocked the boat

Phoenix by Dan Fogelberg

I have cried too,
I have cried too long
I have cried too,
I have cried too long
No more sorrow
Got to carry on

Like a phoenix
I have risen from the flames
Like a phoenix
I have risen from the flames
No more living
Someone elses dreams

Too long the songs have been silent
Too long the strings have been still
I never knew what you wanted
I guess that I never will

There is also a really old song by Millie Jackson called "It Hurts So Good".  I wish I could find the lyrics.
Hint, hint.
