Hopsy,
This Too Shall Pass...

You'll feel better in a few days - remember that...

It's funny, I am good at organizing at work or such... but am now faced with my major disorganizetion at home as I try to sort stuff for the move. I have so much crap and I think the thing is... it is hard to sort when it is personal stuff with sentimental attachment.

Hops,

I'm sure you can tackle this one...you've tackled so much else already!

For what it's worth, I am an out-and-out organiser, list-maker, etc.,so my two-penn'orth goes like this:

Try making a list of just THREE things that you are going to do TOMORROW - write them out the night before, just before going to bed, in as much detail as you can face. For instance, don't just put 'sort out bills' - that's too big a task, too general, so therefore too daunting to tackle in the morning. Instead, try putting 'pay the electricity bill by cheque, pay the water bill by online payment, write to the Health Insurance company to increase the premiums'. Leave it at three items. Then go to bed. Your brain is 'happy' that it knows what it's doing in the morning, so you can sleep (pot calling the kettle black, here - my insomnia is legendary!).

In the morning, do the three things, crossing them out on your list with a BIG BLACK PEN as you do each one. Have a chocolate as you finish each one, too! Then stop, and do something nice as a treat. Don't think 'well, I did just three, but really I should have done all of those bills, I'm still bad, really'. You're not, it just needs tackling in chunks.

Another thing I try to do is only handle incoming post once - the waste paper bin is invaluable, here! A multi-level 'In Tray' helps to sort stuff into bills, letters to be answered and things to be filed (if they REALLY have to be kept).

If I could come round your house and help you with it, I would! I suspect, though, that it's a bit of a trek?! How many miles from Staffordshire to where you live?

Hey CB,
I do have a study in the bedroom next door.
It needs a visit from the Repressed Decor monster before I'd find it a comforting place to be in the evenings though. No couch, though I have a recliner. By evening, I want the bed though. One day, I have Chaise Plans.

Think: large desk, unsubmitted poems, unfinished novel, unanswered letters. Tidy, but calling.
I like to save my study for my Serious Writing, not that there's been much lately.

Oh heck , I dunno. My study is also where I file stuff.

My bedroom is my nest, my most safe space, so that's why I laptop there (also because most nights I have to lie down for my back.). I do think I will have to tackle the TV escape issue at some point.

You're exactly right about avoidance...I'll keep that in mind, right after The Sopranos...and Jon Stewart...

Hops

... try keeping a time diary.

folks on restricted diets because of medical conditions often benefit from keeping a food diary...

... folks on restricted incomes often benefit from keeping an expense diary...

... a time diary is a tried and true fallback for time management and organizing.

with the food diary, the idea is that you write it all down, everything, unflinching, and after a week you see what your true eating patterns are. Likewise with the expense diary and spending patterns.

... a time diary will tell you what you are doing, what you are giving priority to. You can do it either by activity [exercising: ten minutes] or by time slice [10:00 - drive to gym. 10:30 - exercising. 11:00 - lunching at Sardi's.]

I know you think you know where your time is going. It's amazing, though, what keeping a diary can reveal.

An example. For years I have felt mildly aggrieved because I had become convinced that I had an excessive number of projects - compared to other folks doing the same work I do - that came in, or were due, on Christmas, New Years, etc. But I didn't really know. I felt it, but I never quantified it.

This year, I created what I call my Whine List. I went back and pulled the stats on every major project I have handled for the past nine years, and logged the incoming dates and the due dates on every one of them.

Know what?

IT WAS SOOO MUCH WORSE THAN I THOUGHT THAT I POSTED THE DAMN THING ON MY OFFICE DOOR.

Moral of story: Sometimes you make amazing discoveries when you look at the actual data.

Just a thought.

Hi Hopalong,

I too hate paying bills.  But, online banking has helped me so much.  Now, itliterally takes 10 seconds to pay a bill,  No envelopes, no stamps, no check writing.

Thank you all!

The update is that with Mom away I have taken over the dining room and all the papers are sorted and it'll take about an hour to pop them in the right files, and I have a skinny folder of checks to write this morning and then it's done.

Sounds silly but I want a station right inside the door where I'll winnow everything...the mail's my enemy once I take it upstairs to be eaten by my space. So I'm leaving a recycling sack there for half the mail, and a letter opener for the other things, and big paper clips, and I'm going to sort stuff the minute I bring it in the door. ROAR!

Time diary's a good idea, Storm. I discovered www.fitday.com and managed to fill out a whole day! Cool tool, though, I hope to get back to it.

Thanks for all the encouragement and suggestions. It's notable to me that with Mom away, I am gently easing into the space, keeping things tidy, and even my dog is enjoying the space more. (I lock screen doors in the back but leave her free to enjoy squirrel watching while I'm at work.) Ma has so many inflexible rules that the house doesn't feel welcoming to me.

But right now...it feels serene and spacious and lovely and peaceful and I am grateful.

Hard to admit how deflating it's been to see her bouncing back every day in her PT! She's now hiking to the dining room with her walker, all pink cheeked, and laying out the charm for her tablemates.

Yarrgh.

the nicest most healing thing about my life has been this little home I can call my own and make just mine ( with son to and fro of course, but that's nice too! )

Do you have some bit of it that's just yours, a porch or shed or attic or- anything.

Everyone needs a space I think.

Oh I do, Write.
I have two very pleasant spacious rooms...more than enough space.

I'm just psychologically cramped when she's home, not really physically.

Though her downstairs bedroom is literally right off the kitchen, so when I want to go for ice water, etc., in the evening, I literally find myself tiptoeing past her door...lots of lurking and dashing to avoid her. Makes for tension I'm so NOT feeling this week!

I also had two massages. OMG. Such decadence. One I paid for but my boss bartered with a massage therapist to treat us all to a bunch...bliss.

Groaaann bliss. Plus, the woman told me a miracle...there's a local doctor who refers people (under insurance) for, get this, Pilates physical therapy. THAT might be a way for me!

love to all, it's a beautiful weekend and I heard today that I likely have another week to go before Mom's discharged.

Allelooooooooooo!

Hops,

DElighted you are having this "freedom".  The strain of trying to live with someone who is so stressful to be around must be exhausting.

Thrilled to hear that you are taking good care of yourself with a little hands on therapy.  Soak up the luxury of it all.
