A Most Interesting Blog
« on: May 15, 2019, 02:16:10 PM »
Doc G, I apologize if this is the wrong forum (considered putting it on "What Helps?" but didn't think I had the chops to declare it helpful to others!).

Turns out it was helpful to me because it is: 1) amazingly written, 2) funny. Both #1 and #2 go a very long way to being a spoonful of sugar for the medicine, for me.

Enjoy! If it's enjoyable!

Hi Hops,

No apology necessary!  I read the post, and there were parts I agreed with and parts I disagreed with, for, alas (and as you know), I am far more pessimistic about the vast majority of therapists than he is—and my approach (i.e. “relationship therapy for one”) is far different and much further “out of the box.”  My patient, Sara Field’s, book about our therapy, “The Mathematician and the Teddy Bear,” provides a brave and telling (in more ways than one!) example of my approach (https://www.amazon.com/Mathematician-Teddy-Bear-struggle-someone/dp/1514215772).  The proof of significant life change should (IMO) come from the patient side of the room.  Thanks for posting this!

Hi everybody,

While we're on the topic of therapists writing about other therapists, I thought the article below might be interesting to some here.  Alice Miller wrote one of the most popular and renowned psychology books of her era:  The Drama of the Gifted Child ( https://smile.amazon.com/Drama-Gifted-Child-Search-Revised/dp/0465016901/ref=sr_1_1?crid=I61CQ2X197P7&keywords=the+drama+of+the+gifted+child&qid=1558021823&s=gateway&sprefix=The+Drama+o%2Caps%2C139&sr=8-1).  In the article, her son, who also became a therapist and wrote a memoir about her, reveals who Alice Miller really was.  Given my early experiences with therapists that I wrote about in my book, what her son reveals comes as no surprise.

Hi Hops,

Sorry, I meant to include it at the end of my post.  Here's the link:

Alas, it doesn't allow non-subscribers to read it without signing up for emails, etc...or at least that's how it looks.

Phooey.

But I found an interview with him I can open, hope it covers the same stuff:

Thanks, Doc G!

Hi Hops,

Here are 3 quotes from the Haaretz article (strangely, Haaretz would not let me return to it either!):

From "The Trauma of a Gifted Child Whose Mother was Alice Miller" by Maya Sela   (https://www.haaretz.com/life/books/.premium-mother-dearest-1.5255078)

“Alice Miller (1923-2010) was a psychologist who studied childhood and became an icon in the field for her first book “The Drama of the Gifted Child,” which has sold millions of copies worldwide since its 1982 publication. She wrote about the ruinous role of education, castigated the use of violence against children, and analyzed the destructive relationship between parents and children.”

“As a child, Martin Miller was subjected to abuse and emotional neglect. In his book, he writes about this both from the viewpoint of the child he was and the psychotherapist he is today. He analyzes the life of his Holocaust-survivor mother, examines the causes of her emotional disconnect from him, and addresses her poor relations with his father.”

“Concerning the reasons for writing about his childhood only after his mother’s death, Martin Miller says, “It was forbidden to say anything. I had to remain quiet, because I was committed to loyalty, to being on the victim’s side. That is the fate of many people from the second generation. I never demanded answers from my mother. You are like a prisoner, you don’t think consciously about things, you just know that to speak is forbidden. That is why it was only after her death that I could write.”

Hi Hops,

P.S.  Thanks for the other article/interview.  I very much appreciated it.
