BTK serial killer....Narcissist?
« on: February 27, 2005, 09:16:36 AM »
Fox News was interviewing a law enforcement official who described BTK as a malignant narcissist.

What's everyone's take on this?

This is such a disturbing case.

I didn't read the link yet but yes, he is a malignant narcissist. One of the neighbors described this guy's behavior on their street; petty harassment of women that was quite ugly. This neighbor had complained about him to the city (his employer) and nothing was done. He also "called him out" by calling him a coward for harassing women. But BTK did not take him up on the challenge. He was an overt mysoginist and very manipulative, plus a liar.  The main thing here: he is a psychopath (most Ns never commit murder, let alone serial murder). This is very, very extreme stuff. If you want to read about how these people think, there is a book called The Psychopathic Mind by J. Reid Meloy which is the classic on the subject. However it's very heavy going and also lots of nightmare descriptions that I had to skip and not even read.

Absolutely a malignant psychopath.  Very chilling.  Falls into the mindset of OJ, Peterson, Bundy.  Patz

Actually not like OJ or Scott Peterson. They aren't serial killers. But he is like Ted Bundy.

You know, Ted Bundy seemed perfectly sweet to people who knew him socially. It was terrifying - I know people who got rides home with him in high school, and didn't suspect a thing.

But, the story of his mom's attitude is most interesting, really. I can't imagine what his childhood had to be like, but his mom sort of rationalized the entire serial killer thing until the very end. She'd say things like "he is a nice boy"... and I always wonder whether she couldn't come to terms with any failure on her part. Granted, the magnitude of responsibility would be crushing to any parent, but it reminds me of the N tendency to edit out all facts that challenge their self-image.

So true bunny.  I just saw the reporter from Witchita on CNN.  This guy is now claiming he has killed more than 10 people.  Patz

He's a 59 year old animal control officer.

Scarey!  A kind of animal's hangman.  Killing animals for how many years, as part of his job?  I bet they've got the right guy.

He would have to be malignantly N, in order to bind-torture-kill, wouldn't he?  How else would he be able to do such things without feeling anything for his victims?  A pathetically sick person, probably as Patz says, psychopathic.

His poor daughter!

He's been described as a "glorified dog cathcer".

I feel badly for his family.  I'm sure he was abusive to them.

I'm no expert, so perhaps someone can set me straight, but I believe a lot of mental health types consider psychopathy merely the severe extreme of NPD. That they are just different extremities of the same disorder. Right or wrong?

I believe all psychopaths have NPD. They may also have other disorders. It's probably a constellation of various disorders. Not all psychopaths end up murdering someone. And not all psychopathic murderers are serial killers. Many psychopaths live like anyone else and simply destroy the lives of their families. They are always sadistic and they are always very manipulative. This guy compartmentalized his sadism which is the interesting part.

This guy will probably get a Rorshach test and other tests to see what is going on in his internal world. I'm sure it's pretty bizarre. He sounds different from many serial killers in that he was a very social person in the community.

One of the most well-written true crime books about a psychopathic N (that I've read) is Fatal Vision by Joe McGinnis. The killer wasn't a serial killer but a "mass murderer" in that he eliminated his entire family in one night.
