A Question
« on: August 16, 2005, 04:44:41 PM »
I sense that I am imprisoned by a deep need for others to like me, to approve of me. How can I free myself from this need?

Welcome and thanks for coming to share with us.
Everyone needs others. There is nothing wrong with needing other people.
In your case, it sounds like the need for approval is greater than anything else.
I think this is an issue that many are grappling with.
Perhaps you can gradually start to replace the need for outside approval with liking yourself and pleasing yourself.  The first step is to decide that this is your goal.  Then you need to determine who you are and what pleases you.
I don't know exaclty how to go about it.  Others on this board will have a better handle on it.
But you have already taken the first step, noting that things are out of whack and not working for you.  Knowing that you need to decrease your dependence on the approval of others.
Welcome again and good luck.
