My mother was there, terrified and always trying to keep things quiet from the world, telling me "if you just would stop mouthing off, dad would not hit you.  you KNOW how he gets!"  What a friggen CONFUSING BLAMEFUL message to give to a child!

so you were the eldest trying simultaneously to keep the world at bay, protect the younger children and cope with being beaten and neglected.

That's an awful lot to cope with.

When did your bipolar symptoms start?
Loads of people with bipolar have traumatic childhoods, I am sure once it's more understood there is a strong link between childhood trauma and bipolar.

There is a genetic component as well to Bipolar.I just wonder if the childhood trauma had not been there even with the genetics
the Bipolar symptoms  might not even have shown up or would have been lessened?I would bet if the trauma was not there the
symptoms would be small. Is there any medical research on this idea?
