Question: For anyone on single antidepressants
« on: March 25, 2007, 08:57:06 AM »
Hi all.

I'm on Lexapro, a very small 5 mg dose, for anxiety/depressive disorder of some kind, depending on which doctor you ask. lol...none of them seem to agree.

I was wondering, if any of you, who are on only 1 Antidepressant (Lexapro or other, but not a cocktail of them), experience not being able to cry very much about anything.  That's probably the only real drawback of Antidep.  They seem to squelch ANY form a real expression of emotions, in the effort of avoiding the OVERKILL of them.

Anyone else?

Hi Laura,

I am not too good with the American trade names for SSRI's so forgive me...  I tried Seroxat  then Venlafaxine..  Then prozac..  For me Anti D's put me in this window where I have no severe downs but I also have no ups...  They put me on a bit of a flatline..  I mean I wasn't zombified or anything I was just in a plce where there were no real highs or lows.  The one thing I will say is that though I did really well on Venlafaxine, the withdrawals were horrific..  I have just come off Prozac with minimum problems.  You know even though they do kill those intense emotions there are some times when it is better to take them just to keep from sinking very very low...You know that place where there is nothing to do but cry...  I avoided taking them for a long time after my ex N left despite some good advice from the people here, but I'm glad I did take them in the end cos they got me back on my feet and started the process of recovering...

Thanks Spy...glad I'm not the only one in the boat so to speak.  Yes, I intend to stay on the antidep.  It took them this long to figure out what would help.  Apparently my Serotonin is OFF and when I'm not on the meds, I'm very MEAN to my husband, and that's not my heart at all.

Hello , I was put on Celexa (SSRI) and i believe Lexapro is a SSRI as well (however you can correct me on that if i am wrong)

the problem with me was that the Celexa worked "to well" and it made me go manic, so my pdoc said it is typical for people with mood disorders ( bipolor) not to be able to take anti depressents,,

However I can tell you that Lithium stunts your emotions, you litterally feel zombie like without any real emotions ( it is horrible)

I would mention your symptoms with your physcian

I take Cymbalta, it's a newer SSRI also prescribed for neuropathy...
I notice I can still cry.

I take that in the a.m. and also take gabapentin at night for RLS, and that has an antidep effect too...so perhaps it is a cocktail.

Glad you're getting the chemistry working for you, Laura.

Penelope,

I will tell you that, since we first butted heads on this list a while back, I have seen some HUGE positive growth in you.  I'm so glad you and I both have meds that are helping balance us out.

Blessya girl

Lexapro And I am more stable than I was but I did cry a couple of days before I found out I did not get the job.  Harder to do the deed with any fireworks.  Every once in a while I will get those optimistic feelings I used to have when I was young.

Hi Laura,
I am on Celexa, a light dose, and I find I am more emotional that before. And I think the emotions are gentler and kinder than before. I am not sure if that makes any sense. I am rarely angry.
