NMMG,

Nope, they're easy to actually sew - it's getting the initial fit right that is a bit tricky. But it's fun trying.

Did I tell you about my duct-tape dummy? This is another 'thing' that I've made (with the help of my husband - don't ask!!), that makes general dressmaking much more likely to be successful, fitting-wise. Check out this website:

I have to make a bra! Maybe I'll hand-sew the first one....or as you say just tape it on!

Write,

Errm... no. The duct-tape dummy is good for general dressmaking fittings, but DREADFUL for making a bra on :)

Do you suppose one could get one's favorite N to stand in to be wrapped in duct tape?
One could appeal to the N's amazing vanity (ooo, you have the perfect shape for my new dressmaking form, could I please prevail upon you to pose for this form? EVERYONE will envy my...err, dummy...)

And then one just keeps wrapping, up to the top of the head? And finish with a bow?

Write,

The reason you can't use the duct-tape dummy to make a bra is that with a bra, er, how can I put this, the floppiness of the body is crucial to the fit. When you are using the duct-tape dummy to make a dress, for instance, it doesn't fit as closely as a bra, so all you need is the general outline of the figure to 'hang' the fabric on (from the shoulders). The circumference is fairly important, especially if you are making something like a skirt and want it to fit properly, but other than that, most clothes hang from the shoulders anyway. With a bra, the fit has to be much more precise.

Also, to make a duct-tape dummy is rather 'personal' (you need a good friend to help you with it). You need to be wrapped in small strips of duct tape, and it takes about two hours, IME. When you get to the bust area, it is difficult for the 'friend' to accurately contour the shape, over your bra and old T-shirt (which you need to be wearing for this to work).

But it's good fun!

how will I cut the cups? Is that why you had a pile of mis-fits for your first goes???

Write,

When you buy a bra pattern, each cup size is a different set of pattern pieces. So, you start with, say, a 36C set of pieces, make that up, find it doesn't fit, throw them away and cut a set of 36D... It doesn't take too long to find the right size, and it doesn't take too much fabric, so it isn't a problem, really. Most patterns cover lots of sizes in one pattern envelope.
