Hyperhidrosis - excessive sweating?
« on: August 17, 2007, 01:59:07 PM »
Hi,

Just wondering whether anyone is familiar with this condition... which I'm just finding, through research, is quite common.

Excessive sweating on the palms and soles of feet?

My 16 year old daughter has just told me that this has become a persistent problem and cause of annoyance, embarrassment for her.
Been reading quite a bit on the topic online and I've ordered one product which appears to be a good first step at handling it -
an anti-perspirant called "Mega-Dry", created by a Beverly Hills  :P Dermatologist (who goes to great lengths to convince everyone he's not N - lol)

Anyhow, just thought I'd check with you all and see whether you've ever encountered this difficulty or have any further wisdom on the topic :)  Thanks!

Thanks so much, CB... I told daughter that I really thought it was a combination of nerves and hormones, but then... I read about some folks who are having botox injections and even nerve surgeries to alleviate the problem  :?

This particular brand of roll-on has a different ingredient from the rest, which supposedly causes far fewer side effects, as long as you apply it to dry skin. We shall see... will definitely use caution!

Thanks again :)  I hope you're having a really good day there.

With love,
Hope

P.S.  I will definitely tell S the "through it by 18" part!! She will be so encouraged :)

(Lupita - if you are reading - any advice?)

Hope,

If you haven't found it, eMedicine usually has a lot of good information.  Here is a link:  http://www.emedicine.com/derm/topic893.htm

My first instinct would be to take her in for a check-up to make sure it is not secondary to another disorder (just to be safe if you haven't already done that).

Thank you, Peace... that's an excellent site!
The info given there is very thorough.
Mostly, it does agree with what we've read elsewhere, about the link between generalized excessive sweating and other diseases.
Since she experiences this primarily on her palms, and because it is so common in adolescence, I hadn't thought to consult a physician directly.

"Localized hyperhidrosis may be emotionally induced and usually affects the palms, soles, and/or axillae. Unlike sweating on the remainder of the body, sweating on the palms and soles is controlled solely by the cerebral cortex and is responsive to emotional stimuli rather than to temperature stimuli."

But I also see that palm sweating can be related to a particular heart condition, so... a physical exam may indeed be in order.

And yes, Lupita... I would certainly welcome your opinion, if you would like to share!

Many thanks,
Hope

Hope,

I don't know - this might be totally unrelated. But I went through a time period where my right armpit sweated like a football player. Only the right one.

I thought the worst - I must have cancer or something! I asked my doctor about it and she said that our sweat glands are separate and so the amount we sweat from each one is different AND it's very tied to stress. At the time I was under a great amount of stress. I'd wake up, shower, be all refreshed, put on my shirt and in 20 minutes, there was a big spot - JUST under my RIGHT armpit. EEEGADS how embarrassing.

I got RIGHT GUARD, the strongest possible, even the kind made for MEN and used it, it helped but under times of GREAT STRESS, it didn't matter, I still sweated right through it.

I have alleviated MOST of the stress in life now, not all, because that's just not possible. But I haven't had the problem now for some time.

I have not had a problem with the hands and feet, in fact, the opposite, mine are very dry. So, I don't know. But I guess I would ask about the stress levels and see if there are ways she can deal with stress?

Thanks, Dandylife,

It is strange how stress can pop out as physical manifestations like this, but I believe it!
At different times in life, I've had hives, migraines, muscle twitches... and, while married to npd-ex, went through a siege of boil-like eruptions under just one arm - the right one. Weird! Thought maybe it started from clogged pores due to a solid anti-persperant, but now - I think it was just plain stress.

I was reading that Secret has now come out with a super strength formula to address this issue - can be applied to palms of hands, as well.
So apparently, there are alot of folks suffering with this sort of predicament... and thankfully, they're able to express their desire for a helpful product. Alot of kids and even adults might be too embarrassed to bring it up.

I'm so glad for you that it went away! Definitely, I'll continue to talk with daughter about increasing awareness of what's affecting her... because, like me, she says, "But I don't even realize that I'm nervous."  Both of us are coming to a greater understanding of the cumulative effects, that's for sure. She had a good first day of her Junior year, which is only the beginning of a very full year of classwork and extra-curricular stuff, so the timing for these discussions couldn't be better. I'm just thankful to be at a place where all this doesn't seem so overwhelming... wasn't too long ago, I would have felt helpless to help her.

Hugs,
Hope
