Question --and backup to answer needed
« on: July 02, 2008, 03:24:23 PM »
We live in a litigious society. I sued the driver who drove the car that crashed causing my back to be broken and I was disabled for life.

Is suing a Christian thing to do, or is it Unchristian.

"turn the other cheek" etc.

I ask this because I was faced with a supposed Born-again Christian on the Baptist Chureh (Does that make sense?) who had an incident with her car and didn't sue.

She sat there in my living room, and telling me her story made me feel guilty for suing

Hi Izzy,

Here's an article http://www.crown.org/LIBRARY/ViewArticle.aspx?ArticleId=287
from Crown Financial Ministries
which gives what I think is a solid, basic Christian perspective on the topic of lawsuits.
(By the way, this article says it's Part 1 of 2, but I've been unable to find the second half.)

The only aspect of this which is specifically addressed in the Bible (verbatim) = suits against other believers.
However, there is always the spirit of the Word which extends beyond the specific written rule... and that's where an individual's conscience (and her personal relationship with God and communication with Him) comes into play, I believe.

Here's an opposing view, also offered from an allegedly Christian perspective:
http://www.theexaminer.org/volume3/number5/suing.htm

As with everything, it seems, there are differences of opinion.
It's questions like these which make me very glad that Jesus did keep His promise to send believers the Holy Spirit as Counselor and Guide... because without Him, the words really are just dead letters.

About your personal situation... I don't know anything about suits related to auto accidents, but isn't it the responsible party's insurance company which pays? I mean, there are rules and provisions put into place by civil authorities in order to protect all folks' best interests - Christian and not - in such events, right?

I don't know what I'd do, Iz. I guess it would depend on the circumstances... and I think those circumstances would have to be pretty extreme.
One thing is for sure... if we're ever in doubt as to whether we've acted properly, all we need to do is act God. He does not hide from such questions.
Right now, I'm just very glad you have the provisions to care for yourself and your needs! And I do think that your circumstances were very extreme!!

Love,
Carolyn

Thank you Carolyn

I was out to the Library (got lost......was cutting through a parking lot I use all the time, and took a wrong turn amongst the cars...was deep in thought).

I am okay with myself, and thanks for the links. I didn't think to Google this. Maybeth, her name is, didn't sue. I can continie in life now with a different opinion on the thoughts I had back then.

Her car was stolen by a couple of teens who wanted to joyride and they totalled it..a VW Beetle. She said to them that she coulld buy another and she did. So as a Christian she would understand and go by the Biblical 'rules' laid out in one of your examples.

My being a non-Christian, and entitled to initiate a Civil Suit, does not make me materlistic and greedy. It was my 'Saving Grace' for all the years that followed.

Isn't that something? How a thought can be there all the time and bringing out to the open, can (I hope) make it disappear.
Just like the 'Words" thread by Sela. When I realized that Words had hurt me, ......now they don't.

Every now and again, a 'silly', if you will, thing pops up from the past and I hope someone here can understnad and provide me with a posssible answer.

Love
Izzy

Oh good Lord, Izzy.

You know the answer to that one and.....

you were absolutely right to sue.

Too bad it didn't cost the rat anything personally.

Thank you lighter

I know you know and I know I was right, on that one..............................just needed to get ol' Maybeth outta my mind!

Cost to him? All I can say is that it would depend upon his conscience, but I doubt he has one. His feelings of entitlement now allow me to put him on the N category....even after just 3 dates.

Did the bugger ever apologize to you, Izzy?

A note?

Flowers?

Anything?

If not, I seriously doubt he's changed his stance and sense of entitlement in the matter.

BTW.... what happened to him in the accident?

Anything broken at all?  No injuries to him?  I forget.

ps..... don't ever let anyonemake you doubt your reality again, dear Izz.

Hi lighter,

When I was to leave Barrie Hospital for Toronto, where the neurologists were, I was once again in an ambulance (4:30 a.m. after all the x-rays etc....2 hours) and he said to me, "I'm sorry, and I will telephone the sitter and let her know."

Then that day (Saturday) he went out and hired a lawyer who told him to never speak to me or acknowledge me again. This would be for the Provincial Court charging him with careless driving, and for the possibility of a Civil Suit.

Any contact, flowers whatever would be a sign of guilt!

He might have had some scratches, but he walked away from the accident.

This was '69 and my brother became a Provincial Cop in '67. He and my brother-in-law drove out the the Base and were going to beat the sh*t out of him, but security wouldn't let them in....Thank Goodness!

I am trusting my reality more and more each day.

Thank you
Love
Izzy

Yes, and she crawled into my bed and spent the night.

As I was recovering and thinking about things, I realized she hadn't been paid, so I asked my father to go over and pay her. She wouldn't take but $2.00

Another one was my newspaper. When a woman came to see me, I thought about it and asked her to cancel my subscription. She started to cry because I was in such bad shape and still thinking about other responsibilities.

Steps at a time, but I covered them all eventually!

When I was in crisis.... a while back and not long ago....

I kept telling people to "find my cellphone find my cellphone"

Everyone wanted to know why why why I kept going on and on and on about my cellphone.

I answered.... "It has my children's lives in it"  and they still looked at me like they didn't understand how that was important.

The same way they looked at me when I kept insisting they find my 6yo's pink bunny binky boo... I wanted her to have it while she was away from me... it was so so so important TO ME.... but no one else understood that something so little, could mean so much, under the circumstances.

But it did mean so much.  The circumstances didn't dim imporance for my darling child.... relieving her distress... as much as I could and IF I could, was as important as any decision I made that day.

I think there are those who think about other people, question themselves, their motives and actions....

and those who think of themselves and rarely question anything but other's.
