A right to be here
« on: August 21, 2009, 10:51:26 PM »
Lise,
On another thread you used the phrase "a right to be here". When I read it some small hard thing dissolved.

I was just contemplating my ongoing shame over paperwork, lack of accomplishing much outside my job, dirty house. Other things undone. TV watched. Time wasted. Whatever it is.

I just happened on that phrase you wrote and literally felt a small physical change.

I thought of writing it on my mirror.

I realize it's really a key mantra. The moment I read it and then thought about it, something eased.

Really powerful.

Heard it before but it was timing and source...and thank you.

So I thought I'd start this thread for anyone who'd like to think out loud about how that phrase feels.

love,

I agree, this is a significant phrase.

I more often have said to myself "I don't feel like a VALID HUMAN BEING"
I think this is just another version of A RIGHT TO BE HERE.

So Helen, then...the phrase to say to yourself every day in the mirror until it becomes natural and relaxed and friendly would be:

I am a valid human being.

Going to try it?

(I hear it works.)

Re: HOPS

Yeah, the pep talk in the mirror like sales people do, it's on my to do list...

I tried the statement "I have a right to be here" yesterday in the park while doing Tai-Chi.

It really did help! I think it IS a mantra.

Hi Hops,

Funny, lately I was thinking about that same phrase but more about the ways in which we store "entitlement" into our processes. It makes me think about how messed up we get growing up, mixed messages about our worth; what I came to reflect on more was the phrase "right to be human." This phrase is about accepting my human frailties and faults without judging myself so much for having short-comings.

Growing up there was a message of shame wrapped around almost all I did and thought, as well as there was criticism, rejection and abuse dumped and heaped on me; one defense that I developed to counter the attacks was to just beat myself up so that those wanting beat me up, (NM--others) would see that I was already doing the job for myself, then, perhaps, they would leave me alone, or beat me less...?

This is so true, (((Lise))). If *I* beat my NM  to it, by beating myself up,first, maybe I could get some mercy  from her. I did but at the price that I was "bad'        Ami
