Question please Dr Grossman re: email display
« on: August 23, 2005, 11:29:34 AM »
Dear Dr Grossman, can you help please?

Before when I signed in as Guest, the board didn’t display my email. See: http://www.voicelessness.com/disc3/index.php?topic=1635.15 on this thread when I signed in as P guest, my email wasn’t displayed – 28 June (old board).

My question doesn’t appear to be connected with the board changing around 6 July.

On this next thread, the last post has no email displayed and was posted 20 July – a long time after the change-over.
http://www.voicelessness.com/disc3/index.php?topic=1588.60

So I was surprised (nay, slightly shocked!) to see my email displayed yesterday: http://www.voicelessness.com/disc3/index.php?topic=1770.0

Do you know why some Guest posters’ emails are displayed and others’ not?

For our info, has the board changed and if so, will all Guest posts now display the poster’s email address?

Thanks for your help. P

Hi Portia,

Here's what I think is going on (no changes to the board have been made).  If you are "guesting" you have the option of entering an e-mail address or not.  If you enter one, it will be displayed.  On the "guesting" posts in question you entered an e-mail address.  Does that solve the puzzle?

Best,

Richard

Thanks for your reply Richard. No it doesn’t solve my puzzle though. I just tried to post as guest without giving an email and got this error message:

“The following error or errors occurred while posting this message:
No email address was provided.
An invalid email address was given. “

I have to give an email to post, which seems a good idea.

When I first posted on this new board, it gave the same message, so I entered my email but – it wasn’t displayed when you hover your mouse over the white envelope under the name. It just said “Mail to:” with no email details (the first link above shows this, there's no email shown on my P guest post).

Now when you hover over the envelope all the guest post email addresses are shown (in the bar at the bottom left of your browser).

Should I love a puzzle so much? Umm! Thanks, P

I have received this message also.  For some reason,  occasionally, you must log in when you first bring up the site before trying to reply to any post.  It is not consistent.  If you dont log in first and then try to log in with your user name, it says it is already taken and then you must give a new user name and email address.  I have not figured out why and since it is random seems like mroe of a mystery.

Hi all!

And speaking of screwy stuff to do with this board....why does it show Richard Grossman, at this moment, as the last poster, when in realitiy, when I click the thread and look, the last poster is actually Bliz.  This happens a lot and I can't figger it out.  No matter, I guess, except that sometimes I think I miss reading posts because I see a name and think:  "I've read that post" when there might another, after it, that I haven't read but the person's name isn't listed???  The joys of being techinically uninclined I guess!!!

Hi Richard, it is odd. I love a technical problem though. I’m going to twiddle around with this puzzle, not that I’m qualified or necessarily capable. Just intuition about how systems work.

Does anyone have any ideas? Please post or PM me and we’ll see if we can solve this!

I guess all posters are aware now that if you do post as a Guest, your email is visible to all.

Hi Bliz. I don’t think the board allows you to Log In at the Reply page stage. If you try to log in while replying, the board thinks you’re going to post as a guest – it doesn’t have the facility to log in and reply at the same time.

And if you try to reply with your Member name, the board knows that that name is already taken, so it tells you so – i.e. it won’t allow a Guest poster to use a Member’s name, which is great! (At reply page stage the board doesn’t appear to recognise you from your email address either, so it doesn’t think “ah yes, that is Bliz because that’s her email”. It assumes you’re a guest.)

I’m not sure I’m correct here, but this seems to be the board logic. So: you need to always log in at the top-left box: never at reply or post stage.

Hope that makes some kind of sense!

Hiya Sela. I bet you were writing your reply while Bliz was posting hers? – there’s only 5 minutes between your posts. Are you a two-fingered typist like me? Sometimes I write a reply and another three replies have appeared in the meantime! Oh and the other daft thing I do is reply to a thread without noticing that there’s a page 2 to read….embarrassing    :D

Hi P:

I must be really dense because I don't get it.  Bliz's post was already posted and I replied to it in that post above about Dr. G's name being the one showing on the board as the last poster, pretty quick.

So I don't get it.  Bliz's post isn't showing that it was modified, otherwise, Bliz might have been modifying while I was posting and that might explain it.  Nope.  Bliz's post was visible, I clicked reply and posted after it.  I am actually not a one finger typer but a fairly quick typist, using both hands, all fingers and sometimes both feet and all toes (as I gently place those in my mouth, mind you, sometimes :D).

Awwwww well.....the mysteries of cyberland will always be just a tad above my understanding, I bet.   Just another puzzle that eludes me.

Regarding logging in when you reply:

Usually I dont have to log in when I reply.   If I want to reply, I hit reply and everything works out fine.  It is only occasionally when I try to reply that I get the "log in" prompt...THEN...I cant use my screen name. It says it is taken.  It is random.

I only figured this out through trial and error after it happened a couple of times.
