Referral in Houston/Galveston
« on: January 30, 2004, 12:27:52 PM »
I need to get some counseling and would like to work with someone in the Houston/Galveston area whose specialty or interest is narcissism and its damage on adult children.  Any help available?

Hi Stella and welcome. There is a lady called Avery here from Houston who had problems with a therapist. I don’t know if she got a new one but if she did, she may have research to assist you. (I’m kinda having a one-sided argument with Avery right now but that aside, she may be able to help.)

We did have someone called #Texan here too a few days ago, so maybe another person to help you. Stick around for a few days and I’m sure someone will answer you with a positive. I can’t I’m afraid (in the UK) but hello anyway. Hey and if you find a really understanding therapist, maybe I could come over coz I think I need a good one too! Nobody’s perfect around here that’s for sure! Good luck. P

Call the Mental Health Mental Retardation Assn. (MHMRA) for referrals if they do them.  Call United Way.  Call Houston Child Guidance for referral (excellent source).  Just three off the top of my head.  This city I know well and it's resources.  In fact, start off with Houston Child Guidance and see if they have a therapist who will work with you.
Don't let money be your guide to what is good or not as many therapists do work for clinics (no money to set up a practice for themselves yet), and are excellent.
I know, personally, of some very good work done by practicing therapists with Houston Child Guidance.  They were working there until they built enough of a following to go into practice alone (much like hairdressers and other professions do), and did alot of good work.
Good luck!
