A Novel - Excellent Examples in it of Gaslighting
« on: April 24, 2008, 02:50:51 PM »

Hi,

A friend recently sent me a book titled Angels Fall by Nora Roberts.  It has been a long time since I settled down with reading material without a pencil in my hand to underline, make notes, study, restudy, etc.  I was tempted to put the novel aside and make some excuse to my friend about why I'd not read it.  Instead, I opened it up and was captured from the first page and am about finished reading it.

Anyway, the author carries you along the way you expect to be when reading for pleasure.  The book contains captivating examples of gaslighting.   It has been a good read for me.

Another book to consider: ALMOST PERFECT by Alice Adams.

Interesting review--hadn't read it.  I'd say this: N characters make difficult protagonists in fiction, because (as mentioned here) they do not grow and change.  That is to say, they are difficult for the author to work with.  It's hard to sustain readers' interest in Ns, they are, let's face it, tiresome.  But in this case, the protag is a woman who had an N father and and N lover (husband?  can't remember if they marry).  So it's her story.  It's a pretty quick read but for me, having an NF, I found it compelling, one of the better depictions of Ns in fiction, as well as the bewildering milieu they create around themselves.

Sounds like you'll relate to the story.  Good luck!

tt:  I haven't read ANGELS FALL.  Let me know if it lives up to expectations!   Re: Leah's mention of Gaslight, the movie, I've seen that and find it interesting too--we know all along who's responsible but we see the effect on the Ingrid B character.  My M watched it once and proclaimed the husband an amateur.  I thought that rather funny!

I cannot agree with you more that it's important to branch out and do things for pleasure.  I spent a long time reading about mental disorders too, some years ago now, but there came a time I just decided to put the books away, take what I learned to heart, and move forward.  I still reference them from time to time, but I make sure to laugh, too--and I love a good thriller!  Glad ANGELS FALL didn't disappoint, and that the "atmosphere" for the finale was so perfect!

I was just on my way to amazon to buy this book when I noticed they made a tv movie of the novel in 2007 just in case anyone is interested.
