Yes Penny - the old folks still know how to deal with that situation - they could give lessons!! We just need to sit still long enough to let them tell their stories. My fear, is that not enough of us do that -- and someday that knowledge will be lost.

Things are righting themselves down here. The county has been pumping water out of "Between the Highways" in Kitty Hawk, and there's one lane of beach road that's had the sand cleared already... although the section of road in KH that needs to be re-built is going to take awhile longer. When the water's gone, it'll be possible to detour around that section. The ferries are running from Stumpy Point, to Hatteras/Ocracoke and visitors are allowed back to Hatteras today. Couple of fishing tournaments still scheduled to go on this weekend, a chili cook-off, etc.

Word went out this morning, that someone's offering free storage space for business folks and others who need to clear room to make repairs.

What to do when your restaurant is flooded in the OBX? This picture went viral - we happened to drive by there, while folks were making the best of the situation. Word is, there's a huge party planned for their grand opening next week...

yes, that's right - they're steaming crabs, the beer's cold and the kayaks are pulling up to the picnic table... LOL!!  Gotta love this place.

If there can ever be a sliver lining when there's loss of life, for me it is that the
discussion of climate change denial is back on the table. I have prayed for that
because growing contempt for science (and disregard for nature) have made me fear
our country has lost its reason. Some kinds of cynicism or superiority-confused-for-accuracy
won't change but I think more people are awakening.

That's thoroughly offensive.

There is NO personal "silver lining" for those who have lost loved ones.
I didn't mean to detract from the tragedy at all.

What I was trying to get at, however clumsily, is that in the big picture, for me, amid the
heartbreaking losses of the storm...I see a positive thing also happening.
That being renewed discussion of climate change.

Perhaps it's evil to have thoughts about geopolitical issues in the context of
tragic human losses. But I confess I did.

It's not evil to have such thoughts, Hops.
However I wouldn't have thought you would express them before the dead are buried or even found.
My opinions are not the product of contempt for science, disregard for nature, having lost my reason, cynicism and superiority-confused-for-accuracy (whatever the heck that means).
I doubt there's ever a time to mischaracterize someone's opinions like that, but even if there is I know it isn't now.

had done less of when we're looking back on our lives from our death beds.

This morning, we found out our Emergency update website had been hacked. What is WRONG with people?

Edit in: btw - I meant the hacker is mean. The combination of global uncertainty impacting a number of areas of concern for me, a second storm on the horizon following Sandy's path, and just plain old stress... means I'm not expressing myself as clearly, again.
