Cake Wrecks....
« on: July 09, 2018, 01:42:35 AM »
OK, it's DD15's birthday coming up, and we're busy baking the third tier for what is intended to be a 6 layered extravaganza.  We're calling it the "So many ways to go wrong" cake.

DD just ate a bite of raw cake batter on the slightly over cooked bottom of the green tea flavored layer.  It was lovely.  The second layer, a light almond flavor, is divine.  The third layer's in the oven, and I'm ready to throw up so, not sure if I can judge that one.  DD and I watch the British Baking Show, which lead to her cooking down fresh raspberries to flavor and color those tiers.

SO....I'm feeling a bit icky about eating so much cake........DD wants me to at the pink layer currently baking..... she said it looks like a squirrel blended up and baked in the pan.  I think it looks like strawberries, not squirrel.  It's perfectly pink. Beautiful.

Swiss meringue buttercream is planned for the icing.  We have the option of using white chocolate, green tea, almond or a combination of flavors.  She has real sliced almonds... maybe to decorate sides with, and fresh raspberries, and Pocky in strawberry and green tea flavors for decorating with.  Last year she did blue and pink checkerboard cake that said "Nobody loves you."  She's going for something really cynical.... "like boobies" she says.  That's her kind of comedy.  Boobie humor.

Like I said... so many ways to go wrong cake.  DD loves baking beautiful cakes, then writing something completely unfortunate on them.

She intends to sleep on the flavor profiles.... "we'll wing it" she says, waving her hand aside.

We have to go to sleep now.

Wow, that sounds amazing, Lighter!  How impressive, you'll have to let us know how it all turns out.  My son begged me to stop making birthday cakes because they were always such a disaster :)  Now I take him to the shop to choose one :)  Lol xx

If you haven't looked at this site.....
it's a fun one.

The cake journey, today, is a tad more tense than last night.  DD is following her perfectionista tendencies, but only around cutting of the cooled cake layers.  We're back on track now, and dancing while making the icing.

Dancing is better.

Swiss meringue buttercream is whipping for 5 minutes in the Kitchenaid.  We sniffed it, and it was just like Christmas.  DD said the mixer motor smells "heartwarming." Half is green tea flavored, the other half is straight up butter, egg, and sugar.  We forgot to flavor it.  Hmmm.

It's official.... adding cooked down raspberries pretty much tastes like..... well....
if yogurt and Captain Crunch Crunchberry cereal had a baby.... every... time.  In the cake, and in the marscapone.  It's good if you like that sort of thing, but it's not our favorite.  DD adding half and half to the last of the marscapone, with vanilla, and I think that'll do it.  The green tea is still our favorite flavor in all this.

If anyone hasn't seen the Cake Wreck site, I think you'll enjoy it.

Hops... we record The Great British Baking Show so we don't miss it.  So much fun.  All those polite Brits, being kind and funny to each other.  We love it in this house.

Tupp, all those cakes are made by professional bakers!  They aren't made by home bakers, and the wedding cakes are usually shown with the SUPPOSED TO BE THIS pics, beside the WHAT WE ENDED UP WITH pics.  SO much fun.  Keep surfing when you need to laugh, and catch a break.

The cake DD made is bigger than 3 cakes combined.  All the neighbors will have cake, and we'll freez some for family.

Can't wait to taste all the flavors together.  We're getting ready to go out now.  Dressing up, and playing grown up: )  Will let you know how it all tastes.
