Diversity Statement
Hi Parents, Students, and Staff!

We're in the process of creating a diversity statement for our school. This statement will be easy to find on our website and will help to guide our school's decisions about where we prioritize money, how we hire, and how we recruit and provide for students.

Please take some time to consider what diversity means to you, what it could mean for others, and what our school should/could look like.

Thank you for your help!

What would you guys include in a diversity statement?

Gosh I would find that so hard to do, Lighter!  I never know how to word things like that; I just always think that everyone should be included in everything all the time!  Lol, which to me seems to simple it doesn't occur to me that it doesn't just happen automatically.  It's so hard to know how to write things like that.  Will you post up some of the ideas that come up?  I'd love to see some of the things people suggest :) xx

Thanks, Hops.  Very helpful.

Tupp... I was hoping Hops would find those words!

I was also hoping everyone would list ONE thing they find important.

For me it's the fact we break everyone down into groups instead of seeing one human tribe.

We all deserve justice and safety.

And children are sacred.   No matter what they look like, what their gender, their race, sex or individual traits.

Sacred.

I like the UU (Unitarian Universalist) First Principle:

We believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every person.

I'm with G on the politics angle.

Personally, I don't think this needs to be "political"; it starts simply in our understanding that while people are ALL uniquely different (thank God we're not all clones!) we can respect, cooperate, and care about each other.

If that part's understood and accepted in common among people (and for the most part I believe it is) - we don't need laws, statements or proclamations.

Just my 2 cents.
Success is never final, failure is never fatal.

::Going back to re-read posts::.

I didn't see politics mentioned.

I'm curious if something about this thread hit you wrong, Boat.  Is it just the idea of writing what could be seen as a politically correct statement?

I think it might be that, but we're a school walking the walk.

I don't see a reason for NOT writing out a diversity statement if it honestly speaks to a community's attitudes and posture regarding the acceptance of all students.

Hmmm.... I'll have to give that some thought.
