In my case, I was to go to my sis's wedding (in Yosemite). My mom wanted me to make the 12 hour drive with my sis's soon to be relatives (that no one knew.) I mentioned it to a surrogate mom type person where I live. She thought it was nonsense, and she offered her son to take me to Yosemite. She knew we were like brother and sister. Had no problem with us sharing a hotel room (separate beds - - -and on to a cabin in Yosemite).
My dad even knocked on the cabin door and walked in to find us in our respective beds reading our murder mysteries. This young man accompanied me to the wedding and got to watch the family dynamics.
Upon returning from the wedding, my mom called to tell me I had embarassed my sister by bringing this guy. My sister (after my brother-in-law stepping in) reminded me that those words came from mom and not my sister. Ever since then, mom has been busted!
She's been in poor health, and we've taking turns flying out to be with her. After we've been around her for about a week (I don't want to talk about it - - - - -grr), we'd come home and find out she was on the phone badmouthing us about how terrible we were. We now just choose to ignore her.
I think the rift she likes to create between my sister and I - put her in power of the family. Some people just like to pull strings. . . .we've turned (like Pinnochio) into a "real girl" and cut the strings. When the strings are pulled up without anything attached, it's got to be not cool to be looking at a whole lot of nothin. . .
