Good news for a change
« on: October 27, 2005, 05:09:20 PM »
I seem to have lots of battles going on, but today was good, and maybe the beginning of finding a path for my daughter, so I thought I would share the good news.

Last week I deregistered my daughter from school, and registered her instead with a home ed group which offers lessons at a nearby village.  We went today for her first lesson, a three hour English session, and it went really well.  I looked in a couple of times, and saw her laughing with the others, which was soooo nice to see.  And she answered some of the questions too, she told me afterwards.
Meanwhile I chatted outside to one of the other mums, and then read a book and dozed in the car.  It was very hot and sunny today, especially for the end of October!!

This is the first time since July 2004 that she has had lessons with children her own age.  And it is a lot longer since she enjoyed a lesson, and had fun.

She starts a 2 year exam course next September, to take GCSEs (for anyone who knows what they are), and meanwhile I am concentrating on her spending time getting to know the other students, and having fun.

This is going to cost me time and petrol, but other education costs are covered, so that is a great relief.  So, this area at least is looking much more positive for us both.

That is fantastic news October! I am so glad for you both. It sounds so nice that home Ed group. How does it work? I am very interested in that, so if you get any time would you be able to give me more info on that? If I am being too nosey or anything, just tell me - I won't be offended! Also, if you need any help I am a PhD maths student and I adore maths (tragic, I know) so would be happy to offer any help via email. Just an offer... again, ignore me if I am gettingover-excited :)

Well done on good news :D

Great news for you and C, October.  :D  I hope she continues to enjoy it and can make some new friends.  One of the truest statements I have ever heard and I repeat it often--"A mother is only as happy as her least unhappy child."  Life is so much better for us when our children are content.

Hugs,

Brigid

Thanks for the offer on the Maths, Cadbury.  I may take you up on that one!!  Lol!!  And I am certainly much happier when I see C smile, Brigid.    :)

The group is a pilot scheme, where the child is registered with a school, but works at home.  This is a relatively common situation in the US, but practically unknown in the UK.  So I am very fortunate to live where I do (for a change!!!)  Someone told me of the US version recently, and then within days I found a similar UK one!!

Because the child is registered as a home schooled pupil, the school can then provide all the learning materials needed to do GCSEs, and it also pays for a tutor for each subject, who then runs tutorials once a fortnight per subject.  The children work through the courses at home, then take work to the tutorial to be marked, and to discuss the next phase.

Subjects offered so far include Eng Lang, Eng Lit, Maths and Advanced Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Art and some others I have forgotten.  C is interested in History as well, so they are going to include that for her next year.  Learning materials are provided (although you can buy more books to supplement these), as are exam entries, and the place to take exams (the school)  Science subjects are taught in science labs after normal school hours.  (As is some Art, such as a screen printing session scheduled for early November.)

I intend to take C to Engish and Art until Christmas, and perhaps add Maths from January.  But maybe not.  Then she can start on her fulll GCSE curriculum from next September, by which time we should both be well used to this.  And a lot of the other parents share lifts and such, so there would not be so much waiting around or driving.

It is really strange to drive C there, knowing how close to nervous breakdown I am at present, and set all that aside for an afternoon, and become a 'normal' parent again.  Waiting for a child in a classroom, and sitting in the sunshine, and feeling as if the world is beginning to make sense once more.  Hearing C talk about the teacher who laughs when the children laughs, and who does not shout at them.  Asking her how she rates the lesson, and hearing her say ten out of ten.  She was tired, and it was a real challenge for her, but she enjoyed it!!   :D

Thanks for this completely joyful moment.
I am so happy for you and C, and I "see" C laughing and being relaxed.

It must have been a stunning relief.

Bravo for your persistence, you found her this.

Thanks all.  I have just emailed my yb to tell him about this.  I had to wait until I am strong enough for the criticism that may follow.  Or it may not.  He can be ok sometimes.

Next lesson is November 4 - screen printing.  :  )

Meanwhile, I am encouraging C to spend a couple of hours a day with her workbooks, choosing her own work, partly so that she doesn't get bored.
