Non-psyche Request For Your Input
« on: November 19, 2006, 08:54:10 PM »
Hello everyone,

My granddaughter is about to give birth to my first great grandchild.  The shower invitations are pouring in.  I want to do something creative and hopefully unique for this child and if it turns out well for other future great grands.  What I would like to do is create  several time capsules to be opened at specific times as the child grows up.  So I thought why not ask your friends on VESMB for ideas about how to make it special.  What would you include?  What ages would you specify on each capsule? Would love to hear from YOU.

OH! ages 5, 10, 16, and 21.

I'll let the real parents here suggest the best things for ages 5 and 10, but for age 16 I'd suggest some contemporary music CDs or DVDs that will probably have appeal - and maybe some classics, too - plus something about current cars, because that's an interest for sure at age 16! -- and for age 21, check with your local really good wine store - there are some good brandies and cognacs that will keep that long; they must must must be properly stored, though... assuming it is OK for alcohol presents to be given.

[I'm quite aware of the dangers of alcohol but I'm also aware that it is a lovely thing for those who are not endangered by it and know how to use it in proportion. I still miss the aperitifs and digestifs that preceded and concluded nice meals on the Continent...]

Also, I think family mementos are good for all ages, but the really significant ones are probably best held for the later years - for age 10, maybe you could give a letter about what it was like the day the child was born. For age 16, maybe a letter about how their parents met, how their grandparents met, how you met your husband, with pictures of each couple at their wedding. For age 21, maybe a genealogy... and a piece of heirloom jewelry?

hope this helps!

What a truly wonderful idea, tt.

My kids are 6 and 8 now and really love to look at pictures of themselves and are just starting to have an idea of what was going on in the world at certain times.

I would include some pictures (especially of mommy pregnant), some newspaper clippings of interesting news, maybe a children's Discovery magazine (hey... look Pluto has been declassified... Brontosaurus was a made-up dinosaur...news to my kids even now!!!) Perhaps some information on young athletes (where will they be in 6 years???). I am sure others will have lots of other great ideas!!!!!

What a fabulous idea!!!!

Love, Beth

Hi Storm and Beth,

Thank you so much for your ideas for the time capsules.  I like them all.  The car idea is so appropriate for that 16 age range.  I like the Brandy and/or Cognac idea.  My father loved both, so that will give me a chance to tell him about his great, great grandad.

Beth, for real are Brontosaurus not real?  I had no idea.  I bet he won't either.  I do have some good photos to include.  Also, the geneaology thing is good.

You're both so generous.  Thank you.

Wish me luck!

Hi TT,

Tokens from special natural places that may be paved over.
A rock .. with a little map or brochure of where you got it.

Etc...

A feather from a bird. A note saying where you found it.

Anything possible that reflects an endangered species.

Marbles. They're all being snapped up.

Why not combine both ideas and put in the carcass of an endangered bird?  8)

hi tt,

Could you identify some toys you had when you were those ages (5, 10, 16, etc) and shop ebay for replicas?

love the idea!
