A quick rant
« on: April 12, 2007, 08:19:46 AM »

On a morning news show, I was listening to the Duke case being discussed, then they brought up Rutgers to compare, and the comment was made that athletes were a disposable commodity.
No one brought up the idea that women were treated as a disposable commodity (often by athletes) and that women often treat themselves as a disposable commodity.
Not just women, but many "disenfranchised" or marginalized groups.

I wish I had a copy of an old song- was it by Rush?  It said something like "the men who hold high places...mold a new security....
closer to the heart.

Though the practice is difficult to apply and discern, my hope is to try to remember when we all "hold high places" in relation to others, individually or in groups, and keep trying to encourage ourselves and others to "forge a new reality- closer to the heart".

     Any thoughts?

RUSH LYRICS

"Closer To The Heart"

And the men who hold high places
Must be the ones who start
To mold a new reality
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart
The blacksmith and the artist
Reflect it in their art
They forge their creativity
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart

Philosophers and ploughmen
Each must know his part
To sow a new mentality
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart
You can be the captain
I will draw the chart
Sailing into destiny
Closer to the heart

   Poet- Thank you!!

CB- I hope the quotes come out right becase it's the first time I've attempted it, and when I try to preview, it does't show what it's going to look like.  (I'm not skilled in typing or computer use- like Hopalong said- I'm still a bit of a Luddite!)

A friend sent me an email that was a picture that bothered me.  It was two mice, two real mice, not cartoons.  I get the humor intellectually, I get why it was funny, but it bothered me and sometimes I feel so uncool or like such a child.  I know Nature just is, and some things are reality, but I guess what bothers me is similar to what you said- that anyone would make sport of suffering, whether it's our fellow humans or fellow creatures.

Along the same lines - I cannot understand the appeal of a movie like GRINDHOUSE.  I could if it were is small theatres catering to the fringe but I can't as a film on the front page of newpapers across the nation.  This is so very disturbing to me.  Does it bother anyone else? - gs

GS-

I can guess fom the title, but I've not heard of it.  I remember when I was young, horror pictures disturbed me, but I got over it.
I think I read something about things like this being almost a rite of passage, and teens in particular go to horror flicks supposedly as a
benign way of working out maturational conflicts- or something like that.
How about all the epic plays and writings? How about the classics?  They seemed different, but I'm not sure how.  Maybe it's like what's pornographic- one does't know exactly how to describe it, but one sure knows it when one sees it.

On that note- has any body read "East of Eden"?  I was thinking about that for some reason this AM before I got out of bed, and how N twisted and damaged and I guess sociopathic one of the characters was.  It's been a few years ago that I read it.

I've GOT to log off for now- I was almost late for an appointment yesterday and I don't want to get too carried away this morning like I did yesterday. I'm probably not the first one who has felt a little like this when they first started posting, huh?

I'm really enjoying conversing with everyone!!

Yeah, I was reading that Imus talks this way all the time and that his ratings the last few months have never been higher.  Grindhouse I find very disturbing and will not see it.  And I like a lot of unusual things having to do with the arts.  I was reading an article about Grindhouse not doing nearly as well as they hoped on the first weekend out and the producers decided they had not educated the public enough about how much "fun" this movie is to watch.  Well, I'm glad they marketed it the way they did because I would have probably walked out of it had I gone to see thinking it would be fun to watch.  I have seen many movies that are  not for the faint of heart but if the difficult parts are only a small part of a very well done film, then okay.  But some films have little redeeming characteristics and I avoid those.  Grindhouse seems like that to me.  It seems like something a very immature male would enjoy.
