about stories, here is one
« on: September 15, 2007, 08:08:10 PM »
When I married my husband in my country, he is American, he was looking for a submisive obedient women and I was looking for freedom. He thought that if he married a Sapnish person he would get a servant and I thought if I married an American man (I was impacted by James Bond movies) I would be free and married. We thircked each other. After several years of horrible problems, I told him why did he marry a university educated woman if he wanted a servant. I told him that he should go to the mountains and find a native indian of the area, in my country, many do not read and write, and that should be my substitute.
Well, he obeid me. Very obedient. He got a 15 year old girl friend, in my country the consensual age ofr sex is 14, and after a time after our divorce he married her. Now he is 58 years old and she is 29 and they have a baby. She even washes his feet. She is happy with only not being bitten. And my son calls her mommy when he goes to visit them.

He sounds just awful Lupita.  You are so lucky to have a wonderful son out of the relationship.  Why in heavens name does he have to call her mommy?  They must be - less than 10 years apart in age!  Is he using the term in an ironic way?

Here is a story from my MIL.  My MIL is a doctor.  Back in the 80's one of the other doctors married a naive young woman from an Asian country, because he believed she would be subservient, wash his feet, etc.  Then the naive young woman met the lady doctors, and the other wives of the male doctors.   The naive lady mentioned that she washed her husband's feet and the ladies said "What?!"  And then they found out she didn't have any money for herself and was only given money to accomplish household tasks.

Soon the young bride had a wallet full of credit cards and a car and a job and her husband wondered what bus had hit him.  I have to ask my MIL if they stayed married - can't remember.

Lighter:
When i came in to the US i was told that to work as a doctor I had to get a license. Pass all the boards exams. USMLE. United States Medical Licensing Examinations. Step 1, Step 2 CK, Step 2 CS, then get an ECFMG certification, Edicational Commision for Foreign medical Graduates and the apply for a residency training program of generaly three years or four and then pass USMLE Step 3, then apply for license. In that order. So I started for the Step 1 USMLE. Just the exam costs almost seven hundred dollars. I was living in the projects with six dollaras an hour and a wonderdful son to support. Not even dream about buy the exam. When two years later I put the money togetehr to apply for the exam, I discovered that it was not easy. Nine hours exam, practice for intellectual endurance, resistance of stress, defeat the fear and take severak courses and special courses wich added a cost of 20,000 dollars, That is right, twuenty thousand. I borrowe moeny from friends, family and bank. Quit my job as a teacher in public school and went to school for my USMLE Step 1. I passed, then Step 2 CK and passed, then Step 2 CS adn passed. Applied for ECFMG certificaiton, got it. The applied ofr residency training rpogra,. Universal application three hundred dollars plus thirty dollars per hospital. I spent 2000 two thousand dollars in applciations, applied to 82 hospitals , youa re anot allowed to contact them just to apply and wait for a phone call. No phone calls. Zero. All wasted. Came back to teaching. Then some friends told me that because of my age I had t have something else to offer. So if I had Step three Step 3 which have to pass after residency training, many do not pass after training and everything is lost, that they would consider me more if they knew that they would not risk with me because I had the Step 3.
So, I am still teaching and studying for step three. When I get the step three then I will apply for residency training program again, given that  have the money to apply. Taking into consideration that I would have to pass it with out any training, just theory from books.
At the mean time, if anybody knows a doctor who is a proram director and wants to give me a hand, I would be eternally grateful. Not any doctor, it has to be a program director who is willing to accept me in to the program training esidency.
1.- Psychiatry   2.- Pathology  3.- Family Medicine
They say you have to have some observerships in the field. I have not been able to find any psychiatry to allow me to observe his or her practice, nor psichiatry hospital to allow me either. In pathology I did six months of observership. But patology is a very competitive field and they want young and american students, students educated in american medical schools. I would love to do Psychiatry but no observerships available, plus, who is going to suport me while I do an observership? Where?
Please, Do not think that you know, I have ten years investigating, do not tell me that you are going to talk to your doctor, that does not work unless your doctor is a program director. I ean this in saving time, because everybody thinks that it is easy and I am disappointed of hearing that everybody thikns that how come I have not gotten any residency when there are so many empty spots in the residency programs and they prefer to have it empt rather than take an old woman. I do not know what I am saying. Bugt thank you ofr any help.

Hi Lupita,
The only person I know who might know anything is at Maherry Medical College in Nashville. I've written him to see if he has any suggestions.

You amaze me, and you should be so very proud of how enormously hard you have worked. And in another language. It's astonishing.

Great respect for your knowledge and your story.

Senorita Lupita-

I am currently going to law school. It is a good school, ABA, etc, and the other students are younger and extremely competitive ( I could go to a state accredited school and things would be easier). I love it, and I think that I was doing quite well- I almost always knew the answers in class, could figure out the elements and such, even when no one else could give an answer (please I am not boasting in any way- perhaps everyone was just laughing at me !) My NH has been doing things that undermine my physical well-being, and had the police come to my house and they prevented me from leavinhg and going to class. I am meeting with the Dean of Students next week (thanks to my adored friends on the board) and bringing documentation of my disabilities and of of what occurred last week. I am praying for both of us, Lupita, that we are given our chance...

Love to You,

Changing

Thank you Hops. Thank you. When your friend tells you that I need ECFMG certification, tell him I have it. When he tells you that I need USMLE exams, tell him that I have them all. After that he will tell you that it is not up to him.
Then you can tell him that if he knows a program director who wants to intervew me I would be very grateful. Then he will tell you I am going to try. Then he will come with wonderful news, I know a program doirector. Then the program director calls me and tell me that I have to go through the process and apply by the Universal aplication called "ERAS", then I spend all my money, then I still teaching Spanish at a private school.  I am saying this in a sarcastic way but not mean way, I know you are a wonderful person and you mean well. You have a heart of gold. Just I am disapointed and dont have any more hope for that aspect of my life. Just trying to get content with what I have and fo rnow I have dancing.
But at the mean time, you never know, I might have a surprise. God knows what he is doing.
If your friend can help, I will be so grateful and so happy, that I do not know if I will go bananas.
Thank you so much Hopalong, thank you.
God bless you.

Hola Lupita-

I have a friend from another country who had a similar predicament- imminently qualified, yet not admitted. He worked in another capacity at a teaching hospital, and eventually a Board Member insisted upon his admission to the program (he is now a surgeon). At any rate, I'm going to keep praying that God open a way for both of us to freedom and fulfillment!!! And we will do our best to carry on, whatever happens!

Love and Best Wishes,

Changing

Understand totally, Lupita. How frustrating. I'm glad you're letting go of false hope.
False hope is foolish and there's no solid reason to expect answers from my friend.
(He's just the only one I could think of.) He may not respond if he has no answer, too.

Still, I admire you so for persisting with the class.

Hey Lupita:

I had one poster contact a psychologist, bc he said he would see her for free, which was very  kind of him to offer... as they were in the same area.

I wouldn't have any ideas about what you need..... but I will say that I know a doctor, from Peru, who came here and went through whatever it was that he went through to become certified in the United States.

It can be done and you're an incredibly strong individual..... I hope you keep trying and get your medical career back on track: )

An old classmate of my brother is a doctor. He said he will recommend me for a program. He said that there are 200 candidates for one position, and all are younger than me, of course. He still took the bother to recommend me. He said that there is a remote possibility. So, let us pray. You never know. Most important is to be heppy woth one self and oeverything else will come in to place.
Pray for me.
