How easily are you taken in~~~~~~~~~~~~~~?

~~~~~~~~~~~~let's use commercials for instance.
Can you resist them, use common sense or buy indiscriminately?
I was taken in and happy with ZEST soap. It promised no bathtub ring, and J_ _  always left that ring and one in the sink.  Then I didn't have all that to clean every day!!!! 44 years now!
Lipton Cup-A-Soup. I just knew I wanted that in the evenings instead of tea or coffee.
Those round chocolates that are wrapped in gold---can't remember the name, as I finally stopped as they were too sweet.
I cannot stand commercials and every so often a cute one comes on but---
Hi Izzy,
Heard someone speak once who used an analogy from his career experience in Marketing and Advertising.
And he explained the 'subliminal' suggestion and 'auto' suggestion techniques in television advertising.
Along with 'colour' techniques and 'cute' animal or animated images.
Amazing stuff.
But that cute fluffy puppy or kitty tugs at me every time  :)
Regarding cleaning the bathroom stuff ... I fell for the 'spray it all over the shower tiles' and sit and watch ... like magic all becomes sparkling clean, grout n all .... kept going back into bathroom with hope of an astonishing glistening before my eyes ....
...... but ended up back to basics with plain old bleach and a scrubbing brush!!   :lol:
thanks Leah,
I read up on that subliminal messaging, and then borrowed a number of magazines to study the Pictures. (Commercials go too quickly) I saw more and more as it became easier to recognize words, right side up, upside down, placement of certain props and 'hidden' images of nudity,, etc.
Also movies are loaded with subliminal messages, especially food, popcorn and hotdogs.
And I am interested in the wording of commercials, the promises, so asked how easily folks are 'taken ln'
Funn--eee
Hi Izzy,
Gosh that's so interesting that you have read up on subliminal messaging also.  After that guy explained about how Marketing works
in the media; television commercials, magazines, advertising boards and such - I was both fascinated and intrigued.
And at the time, recorded a few commercials, to play back and scrutinize!
Missed the 'movies' aspect ....... you're so right they do!
... all so dedicated in their mission ..... telling us what we should be doing, and how we should spend our money!!!
YeaH
--and after 37 years of people bit*hing at me I finally bought a cell phone today. (I still think there are so many of them around & if I ever needed help, car broke down, ran out of gas, etc. I could always depend on a helper showing up who would have a cell phone.)
Does that make me easy to take? I don't think so!
For this broken leg, I  never heard so many people telling me I ought to have one, so to shut them up I did it.
What am I missing I wonder? Likely nothing, but someone might find something!
Hi Iz,
Your asking that question makes me feel some kind of accomplishment at the end of my day.  I have excellent sales resistance.  I like good commercials, but don't feel compelled to buy what they're advertising.  Admiring their salesmanship is sufficient!
You bring up interesting little asides on the board that i enjoy.
Love,
tt
Hello Izzy!
I have been fascinated for a long time with "The Hidden Persuaders" and such, which reveal the (sometimes very sick) words and images which are drawn into ad photos. It becomes quite easy to discern them, though one might appear completely nutty to the uninitiated. But I fall for the complexion care item ads still- as Joni Mitchell (your fellow Canadian) wrote "... all these vain promises on beauty jars, oh, somewhere with your wings on time you must be laughing, up on your feathers , laughing..."
I hope your leg is mending well, and all other maladies have departed. I hope your loved ones hop over the "fence" soon for a long visit, as well.
Love from the United States,
Changing
Hi tt, Leah and changing,
So I was thinking, when I started this thread, about being gullible and being taken in. It was from a commercial on TV, but then I thought of all the charming words and actions the N shows when he is setting us up. Many of us fell for it.
I finally gave in after 37 years re the cell phone. HA!
Would we fall again for an N? We would be very cautious and see if we read anything sinister in his words and actions.
I was just reading a book, in which a 14 year old girl, ended up naked with her boy friend and was still saying 'no' , as he was begging, and he began spinning all these wonderful tales and 'I love yous' and she was so confused, then he had sex, in a minute, and she didn't even know it happened', so to speak.
Oh the Liars out there!!
and the salesmen!!
and, tt, the pride we can take in ourselves at day's end that we made it safely through another day. (I loved that)
Love Izzy
Hi Iz,
Commercials...I'd buy anything Roberta Washington sells, including any money Genworth Financial would like to send my way.  No kidding, I love that little old lady...My name is Roberta Washington.  I'm 100 years old.  I'm happy.  I do what I want to do.  I never dreamed I'd live to be 100.   Isn't she wonderful!
Oh tt
You have me confused. I Googled Roberta Washington and she is not 100 years old.................surely...the architect. Now don't you fool with my mind. You would buy anything she sells?? Well she sells her services as an architect.
But somehow I expect there just might be a little old, 100 year old toothless black woman who sells ...........something?.....and casts spells!
Please straighten me out?
xx
Hi Izzy-
I was reading my Contracts case book today, and read a case which would fit well in this thread. In the 1950s, a 68-year -old widowed "coffee girl"  (don't know exactly what that is, but it's some sort of work) was sold $39,000 worth of dance lessons (lots of money for those days). She had been told that if she completed the lessons, she could leave her tiresome work for the glamorous life of a professional dancer!
The case included a revelation of many of the high-pressure sales tactics used upon the victim. Techniques included:
Telling students with no dance experience that this was an advantage in becoming a professional
Telling students with dance experience that this was an advantage
Telling prospects that they have unusual talent
Not giving prospects any time to "think things over"
Wiring the sales room so bosses can hear what is going on during negotiations, and give pointers to salespeople to close the deal.
The list goes on and on
I have incredible sales resistance in most areas (maybe because I don't watch TV?) but am weak in others. Now that you have focused our attention on this, I will try to get a better handle on my consumer foibles- I wonder if this ties into my buying into years of N hell?
Love,
Changing
Hi Iz,
I think I'm right with the name.  It's a commercial on TV for Genworth Financial.  Roberta is a darling little black lady striding along on her way someplace.  The script goes something like this.  My name is Roberta Washington.  I'm 100 years old.  I'm happy.  I do what I want to do.  I never dreamed I'd live to a 100.
When the commercial comes on next time, I'll get ALL the details and let you know.
I Googled Roberta Washington--have you?--that's who I found. I didn't Google Genworth Financial, as I don't receive anything about them in Canada.
In the commercial Roberta sounds cute and funny, but the picture that came up when I Googled her didn't look to fit as you had said.
