Dear Lollie,
It seems clear to me that YOUR situation with the violin in totally different than your D's. You can give her the "gift" of music and it is one of the most precious gifts a parent CAN give a child. It is a priceless gift(IMO).
I see music as one of the best gifts my M ever gave me.
Lollie, I think that she would be so happy to play the violin. You would not have to "push" her.Let the teacher tell her how much to practice.
I think that you need to separate your childhood issues from hers. When you do, you will see it more clearly(IMO)    Love, Ami

Dear Lollie,
I did not have the exact thing that you are descibing ,with your D, with my sons, maybe b/c they were boys. I had an relatively  "easy" relationship with them, emotionally.
I felt as if they were separate from my issues. However, we each have different  problem areas left over from our childhoods. My issues were more of problems with my M and H, than my children.
Maybe, you should start a thread ,Lollie,b/c I know that it is a common issue .
As far as music, for most people ,it is one of the greatest pleasures of life to be able to play an instrument(IME)
Keep Writing and sharing, friend.       Love   Ami
